Gonna Quit Drinking for a Month

As I get older, I find that alcohol affects me physically much more than it used to. If I go past 2 beers, I'm up all night tossing and turning, and I feel crappy the next day. I love craft beer and good cocktails, but I generally stick to one drink now and call it a night.

At the beginning of 2015 I made a new years resolution that this was the year I would take care of myself in all aspects (health, finances, spiritually, etc). Part of that was loosing weight, and that meant drinking substantially less than I had been for the last 10 years (I'm definitely a drinker and partier) and by simply tracking my alcohol intake with the LoseIt app I've lost 22 lbs already in 2015.

I've also noticed that my alcohol tolerance has deceased dramatically; one neat double of Maker's Mark on Wednesday evening gave me a minor hangover for half of Thursday. Unfortunately any cash that I've saved by cutting out booze has been appropriated by G.A.S.!

I know I'll thank myself next week. My next week or so is going to be exhausting without alcohol involved.
Lots of driving. I've got bar gigs 20+ miles away Friday & Saturday nights, practice Sunday at 1:00, and a coffeehouse gig 20+ miles away Tuesday night. Timing couldn't be better, except for all the good beer in my fridge.

I don't drink any more, well maybe socially.
I just don't feel the desire for it anymore.
It's funny though because now that I am talking about it I feel like a beer, lol.
...Ok the feeling passed.

Today is day 93 for me. Between working in bars, and DC being a generally drinking town, my alcohol consumption went up. The fact that I don't really have to pay for it didn't help.
When I first stopped drinking it was only going to be for a month or so, but then I did some research on the medications I take, and now that I take testosterone I realized that drinking was not for me.
Working in a bar/venue really makes me happy that I'm not so much a drinker anymore. Between the customers, and the hungover coworkers, I'm really happy that I don't function like that.
Also, my head and body feel so much better. I sleep better, I'm less sad. The only thing that would make this better would be if my fiance didn't see this as having a permanent DD. She has been getting drunker and drunker when we are out and about, the other day I had to Uber across the city, at 4 am, to get her from a party she had accidentally gotten wasted at.

Good on you! You got a buddy here.

Congrats on the now-day-100! That's a milestone for sure.

Did not realize that T and alcohol do not play well together. Any number of other things, yes, but didn't know about that.

That's a bit concerning about your fiance. More than a bit. 'Drunker and drunker' and then 'accidentally getting wasted' ... well... yikes. Take a good look at that one.

I quit drinking for religious reasons about 6 months ago. I also quit smoking, but I've given in and taken cigarettes that were offered to me since. The drinking I've not had a drop outside of cough medicine. Now I am tormented by drunks at work. I work at a gas station in a college town, so I often get reminders I made a good choice for myself. As I tell my co-workers, no one ever gets called a winner when they are drunk. My dad is in the ministry and we don't see eye to eye on alcohol. Generally in Christianity there are 3 camps on the issue. 1. Nothing wrong with alcohol 2. You can drink, just don't get drunk and 3. Off limits. My dad is in camp 2 and I'm in 3.

More power to everyone jumping on the wagon
I've been sober for 18years now, and haven't been in jail since I quit, lol. Make sure you all find something to do with your free time (the time you would normally be drinking), otherwise you will find yourself thinking about it.

I tell people it's a 20 minute battle in a lifelong war. If you can just keep yourself from giving in for 20 minutes, the urges subside and you win the battle. Now if I can just take my own advice with food :)

Years ago I heard a sober person say "If it causes problems, it's a problem." Pretty simple and I'll never forget it.

OP we have reached day 28, it has now been one month. Did we reach the goal together? How ya feelin' these days?

I made it :D

This past week was my trip to Disney World with my girlfriend, and, as such, I did consumer several beers and glasses of wine throughout the trip (as I had planned). However, having just gone a month without any alcohol did make certain aspects of drinking much more noticeable to me. For one, it doesn't take many drinks to get me feeling groggy and irritable, and it definitely reduces my ability to truly enjoy things. I never quite noticed that before, and this experience brought that to light. In addition, beer just seems to make my body feel and look bloated. I was really surprised by how shredded I got after a month of not drinking, and I was also just as surprised by how quickly all my gains seemed to disappear after only a few days of drinking. And as noted before, my ability to get a good night's rest also seems to diminish whenever I have a couple drinks.

Overall, I'd say it was a really good experience, and, going forward, I plan to continue on this path of not drinking (for the most part). It doesn't seem worth it in any real way, shape, or form. I know I'll continue to enjoy a good flight of micro brews from time to time, but, by and large, I think I'm done with it.

I definitely recommend people giving this experiment a go just to see how it affects them. It was a very positive thing for me!

Eating better for a month was another experiment I did, though I found it much less exciting to post about :D I can say that eating better has also changed my life for the better. Perhaps that thread needs to be started :p

I lose weight fast on the Paleo diet, but I feel the best on Vegan diet. Unfortunately, I am a total addict when it come to over eating and it's hard to fight the urge to stretch the stomach out and get "high" off it all. I ordered DDP Yoga and some Bowflex dumbells. They sit, lonely and dusty next to my tv :) I'm going to go paleo starting tomorrow and try to get back down to size. I had a partner in it all, but if my partner fails I jump ship. I feel I can go through anything so long as I know someone else is going through it with me.
