I have a Dearmond Pilot Pro 5 in natural finish that I don't use much. It is in great condition. I would sell it for $175 plus shipping if you are interested. It is just as nice as most other Korean made basses which is probably what you are looking at in that price range.

I fixed my original post, just for you.
I had an MTD Heir 5 with an Aguilar OBP-3 on it, it kicked butt. I have a sweet older MTD grendel right now, with some luck on ebay you might be able to find one of them. This is an older one, and sounds awesome.
If you can get a Lakland 55-02, I would recommend that. Or, get either the 55-01, the heir, or the Cort JP and if you need to switch out the electronics. I like the way all three of them feel.

Id suggest looking into Schecter basses. The Custom, Elite, and Studio series are all great values for the money. The sales people at Guitar Center might try to say the pickups will die out on you like the ones over here in NJ told me, but that is just not the case. All three of these basses come with the HZ series pickups from EMG and can achieve a wide variety of tones. The Studio has a different bridge and a bubinga top and an 18 volt Eq, but otherwise its the same bass as the the Elite.
The Custom plays fantastically well, but it is a bolt on.

I second/third the Schecter. I highly recommend the Stiletto Series. It's got great balance, string width, and playability. The tone is great in my Elite 4. Acoustically pretty bright and once I got Active EMG 35Js in her, it made the sound a world better. Extremely versatile and even the best model (Elite 5) would cost you probably $400 on the 'Bay.
Leaves money for new strings, a setup, and possibly newer pickups if need be.

I have a 4 string model of the Schecter Stiletto Studio I picked up in 2002. This is a solid bass with good build quality. I would have no qualms getting a 5 string version of this bass.
Spector is a great choice. I picked up a used Rebop 5 on ebay for under 4 bills! By far the best bass I've ever bought in that price range. Nice and light too.
