Good bass for rock

Go to music shops. Play stuff. Find stuff you like. Use punctuation. When you have found something that you like the look, feel and sound of, go buy it. You don't need someone to tell you what to buy, it is your bass, and your choice.
If you have the opportunity to get a 1972 jazz at a price you can afford then go for it. I'd play it first, as from my knowledge 70's fenders tended to be a bit hit or miss.

What kind of "rock"?
The 72 jazz may be fine for a great deal of music but lacking for others. I for one prefer a Fender P bass for 50 - 80's rock and blues. But neither is all that useful for 90's electronic styles.

If you have the money to buy a '72 Jazz, I think you'd be better off with a Lakland 55-94 5-string. They're killers, and when playing rock bass, that extra string comes in handy. The low "B" makes people look at YOU! Yes, YOU, the bassist who never gets attention. I've owned Fender Custom Shop 5-string Jazz Basses. I sold them. $650 Lakland 55-02's were better basses for rock!
Most folks feel, as I did the research a few months ago, that the P-Bass is a must in your arsenal for rock. Whether that is a Fender or a different named brand is up to you.
I have an active bass that I can dial up the p-bass sound and then change to something else if I want. My passive bass is a good strong rock sound. It is up to you.
My opinion... find the bands you like the sound of, and would like to emulate, ... find what they are using...try those things.

I'm thinking precision because some of my fav bands bass players play precision such as Steve Harris (iron maiden) geezer butler (black sabbath) John Entwistle (The Who) Roger Glover (Deep Purple) John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) Geddy Lee (Rush) etc.

tell me! hell man, in australia you would be lucky to get a 72 jazz NECK for $800 lol.
buy a highway1 p-bass from the us would be my recommendation to you, or a japanese p-bass.
both can be sourced through ebay (i recommend buying from overseas yourself instead of buying from one of the australian importers: you get alot more bass for your $)

Steve Harris is on the cover of the October 2006 BP playing what is clearly a PBass. On p.3 of that issue, he's holding a P-style bass, although there is no Fender logo on the headstock. On p.33, he's holding what is clearly a Fender PBass. The article points out in numerous places that he played PBasses w/Roto flatwounds, and he lists his current bass as that same old PBass he's always played but mentions that it's currently painted white. Geezer Butler has played PBasses for years, Vigiers for many years, and for the past few years has played Lakland JO's and BG's. As proof, look at the pics I've attached, one of which is my Geezer bass. As for The Ox, he played hundreds of different basses, and is best known for his "Buzzard" basses, some of which were made by a bass company he made it known that he loved.....Alembic! I have 50 35mm Ektachrome slides of Deep Purple live in concert here in various locations throughout Texas in the '70's, and Glover is playing a PBass. In most of the concert video's I've seen, and I'm 53, I see JPJ playing PBasses and one of the 8 or so Omega-Tail Alembic Series II basses they made for him. They made him the first one and gave it to him and he was so afraid of damaging it that he refused to take it out of his home or on tour, which was why Alembic wanted him to have it in the first place, so they made him a bunch more just like the first one so he would take them onstage giving Alembic the exposure they needed at the time and he wouldn't have to worry if one or two of them got dinged. Geddy Lee has an endorsement contract w/Fender now due to his Signature bass, and the subject of his rediscovery of Jazz basses is covered in the August 2007 issue of BP; however, we all know he's been onstage w/PBasses and we all know he's best known for getting that unmistakable Geddy Lee sound w/his beloved Rickenbackers, which he began playing because he idolized Chris Squire's sound. He speaks about this and the fact he still uses a black Rick on stage for certain songs in the article in the August 2007 BP. I can tell you for a fact he still plays his black Rick live, because I saw him use it on 3 songs on their tour this summer here in San Antonio. So, let's not jump all over our poor thread-starter by trying to claim his favorite rock bassists ALL PLAY JAZZ BASSES. They do. They also play every other bass known to man, and they are certainly NOT known for playing Jazz basses exclusively. Nothing could be further from the truth.
