Good basses that arent fender?

I feel like whenever I go anywhere, if I'm trying out basses the fenders just seem to blow the others out of the water. I really love fender, but I'm growing so tired of my j-bass sound, and am wondering what other basses sound good?

I know a lot of it personal preference, so what have you guys had luck with in the past?

If you're into Fender it's going to be difficult to wander away from them.
For example I'd take an Ibanez SR rather than a Fender any time, any day. Obvisously you wouldn't.
Fortunately, most brands offer Jazz style pickups that differ a lot from the typical Fender tone.
So I'd suggest trying to change pickups on a JB you like already ans see how it goes.

Go for a different sound - maybe something with a 2HH where they aren't right on top of each other (not a Warwick). I like my Bongo because it sounds great in a number of different ways, and it has no hum (a problem with dual single coil pup basses like J's).
