Ibanez Gary Willis GWB 35 is very good for the price, especially used.

There are usually a few Peavey fretless basses on Ebay at any one time. Good quality, US made basses to start fretless playing with. I've seen them sell for $200 and up.

Yes-yes-yes! The neck carve on these just begs to be played. The ash body adds some punch over the older mahogany model, and the Barts plus 3-band EQ provides tremendous versatility.

I have an older one with mahogany body and 2-band EQ, but with aftermarket USA Bartolinis and preamp, strung with basic NPS roundwounds. The versatility and persistent musicality is stunning. I can easily slip into the mix like a P-bass or dial over to the bridge pickup and go all Jaco. It's a powerfully versatile instrument and an absolute joy to play.

These current models not only have MIK Barts, but Hipshot-licensed tuners.
