it's a girl bro. her first couple albums from the early to mid 90's were early hip-hop R&B type stuff. Her brand new album (this year) is kinda free-jazz avant garde type stuff.

I like old school R&B, hate hip hop with a passion.. but I'll try to see if she's in itunes.. if she can groove, then she can groove! I won't argue until I hear for myself otherwise.

You know, I've seen a few threads where someone will point out a "great" woman bassist, and then there is some clip, or link to a vid and I click on it and I'm like :rollno: cause she sounds like Adam Clayton with a pick or something, but she's usually a hottie or something, so all the dudes in the thread will drool all over her.. which is so lame..

Here is a case to be made for a genuine talent and a bassist with "Groove" (something so, so, many both men and women lack) and yet I'm not even familiar with her, as she clearly doesn't get enough recognition.. why? I'll leave that for another thread..

search just the Bassist section for "Meshell" it gave me 8 pages of threads that mention her :bassist:

but yeah, far too unsung

Sorry if I came across as arrogant. I really thought you might be kidding, since she gets a lot of press in the bass-player world even if she is not as well-known in the bigger sense. She is also known for playing old Fender Jazzes.

She doesn't play all that much on the videos because she "can't play and sing at the same time." Everything she does is just so funky and laid-back. I just discovered her in the last year or so, because I don't pay attention to hiphop in general either. What sold me is "Pocketbook" on the album, then watching the videos of her playing with Spirit Jamia.

Everything I have heard her play is the very definition of in the pocket.

Yeah, I've never been much of a reader of Bass Player, though I know I should.. I get buried in my old (and sometimes new) records/cd's, and so much of "todays" music just turns me off.

She looks like a younger Sharon Ray.. and as good if not better from what I can see in those clips.

I now know another name actually worth mentioning should there be another "obligatory" woman bass thread.. :bassist:

My bad, I think I confused Lettuce with Sam Kinninger's Band. All the same cats seem to be in these combos hehe.

It's all-good man,

Yeah some of the others like Zoidis and Smirnoff are in a bunch of the same combos and working in different circles around the north east as well. Deitch has been doing gigs with Average White band and Scofield as well as that Lettuce tribute gig.

My brother who plays guitar got to play on stage with Larry Graham when Eddie Murphy tried doing some music stuff...did not go anywhere but bro says he had fun though.....they played montarauex Jazz festival in sweden...he has also played with Joey Molland from BadFinger....so what I have heard Larry can Groove :bassist:
