Good starter home recording gear?

Hey all,

So, i'd like to get some basic recording stuff, for recording some solo bass jams and possibly some band stuff in the future, i hope (well, not IN a band currently, but playing with friends)

Basically, i've currently got the free trial of Reaper, with a normal PC audio cable connecting my laptop to my bass amp via a minijack -> jack plug adapter. And.. yes. that's it.

Can i improve this easily? Or should i consider a basic mixing console thing?

cheaper is better, too.

im normally one to say that the standalone recorders are garbage. i would look into a cheap interface. the prices normally range depending on how many inputs (at least in the lower price ranges). make sure that whatever you find is compatible with your computer (ports, OS, ram, etc).

a one or 2 input interface would be fine for recording solo bass. you might want to expand as your needs change. then mics and stuff come into play. a presonus firebox or audiobox (i think thats what the USB one is called) will do for now. if im not mistaken, they come with a copy of cubase.
