Got a NOTE on my car from neighbor

I've never understood why people feel they have to have the volume so loud as to rattle the windows while practicing anyway. There is no reason for it.

I've got a tube amp that I can't overdrive until around 7/10, that's damn loud with 300 watts into a 410 ported. But i like it overdriven, so sometimes i practice like that with earbuds.

There's a reason for it.

In my neighborhood, my bass playing is the least of anyone's concern.

I've got a neighbor that has boxers that bark excessively whenever he isn't home. Another neighbor my wife can hear having sex (I can't). There's the gay neighbor that has monthly "private" parties. And there's the "soon to be divorced" couple that fight louder, every month. Hot rod/midlife crisis guy with his 71' 442. Motorcycle dude that doesn't believe in mufflers. And the foreign couple that love to shoot off fireworks, at the drop of a hat.

I think it's time for me to buy a larger amp...

I think it's time for you to call the cops or look for another place to live.

Unless LE can walk up to your door, and 'hear' it for the complaint. The complaint will be bassless! :D

I fail to pickup on this ...

You would be surprised. If there is a water or sewer main running underneath both units, bass can travel. I used to have a neighbor the next house over--separated by a driveway and building setbacks from the property line--whose bass could be clearly heard in my bedroom (but not other parts of the house). A sewage main was the culprit.

Wow, that's a S!!!!!! story. How was the tone, btw? Dark?

this made me laugh in a way that is inappropriate for the workplace.

That happens a lot in this forum.

I've talked to the fireworks neighbor about aiming away from my house, and the neighbor with the boxers. And they are both trying to be cooperative.

I most likely make it sound worse then it is. I was just making a point that a little base thumping is no more than par for the course around my neighborhood...

I'm pretty sure it'll quiet down once they hear the click-click-boom of a 12

I've done the speakers pointing toward the ceiling thing in the past when someone was playing their stereo 'way to loud at about 1am.But I wasn't playing bass over the speakers; instead I hooked up the CD player and stuck in a CD of Scottish bagpipe music... Truce worked out shortly thereafter....

From a law enforcement perspective, most of us hate anonymous noise complaints from spineless neighbors. Most complainers won't give their name to the dispatcher.:ninja:

Spineless? Wow.

Maybe, just maybe, they prefer to stay anonymous because as you've undoubtedly seen, minor things can escalate and get ugly very quickly. After all, when seconds count, the police are just minutes away.

Most of the folks here seem to pretty respectful when it comes to the disturbance factor. I can see where a note is appropriate and probably more convenient to the complainer, although a face to face conversation would lead to fewer confusions and less resentment.

I got a nasty note in my mailbox from my new neighbor over my barking dog; I live on a 1 acre lot. I walked over to his house and he wouldn`t answer the door. So I went home and called him. I explained to him what steps I would try to quiet the dog down - he demanded I get rid of her. I explained to him that one can hear barking dogs all over the neighborhood, and since it`s my yard, there`s not alot he can do about it. I also explained to him that in the future, just talk to me face to face about problems; do not stuff notes in my mailbox in the middle of the night. I bought a swanky bark collar, put up a privacy fence, moved the dog house to the other side of my yard. Worked for awhile. Then he calls late one night and my teenage daughter answers the phone: he proceeds to scream and cuss her out because the dog was barking ! I snapped, and was ready to go over and whip his a**, until we found out why the dog was barking: they were repo`ing his car in the driveway ! After I watched the tow truck speed off, I called him and told him my dog was fighting through the pain of being shocked, trying to warn him that his car just left on a tow hook, but he wouldn`t listen. Laughed in his face, told him not to ever speak to anyone in my house again but me, and to worry about his own troubles instead of giving me grief. Never heard from him again.

Across the lot neighbour got our guitarist's car towed from practice last night. Apparently his landlord told him his spot was his (they are shared). When the guit said "where's my car?" to us as we exited, he yelled out, "****ing towed, buddy!" "You play too loud, you park in my spot, I'm sending a message".

It was all I could do to hold our drummer back from showing the guy the back of his hand. $150.00 later we got the guit's car out of impound and clarified with our landlord regarding who has what spot and what the parking rules are. He was clear, no one owns any spot.

So at midnight, guit went back and had the dude's car towed by a different company. Tit for tat...

I'm not impressed with the whole passive-agressive note writing junk. If you are a repeat offender then they should come talk to you in person. If this is your first and only offense they should let it pass. I'm not sure why but I've had neighbors who get worked up about things like that. It is beyond mentally healthy to carry on to those means.

Agreed.

And to the original poster, put a note on his car saying you appreciate his situation and you goofed, sorry for the mistake.

Then add that since he hasn't got the scrotum to tell you in person, tell him he should be sure to have plenty of paper and a pen in his purse next to his tampons.....

I had a neighbor that lived one floor down from me in an apartment building. This person must have really loved house music cause they would be playing it loud as hell all the time. For a wile I just let it slide. Then one night it was playing at like 3:00am and on this particular night I really needed my sleep. So I took my 215 faced it to the floor, turned my mesa 400+ 3/4's of the way up and just gave him one big bump and about 30 seconds later the music stopped and was never herd again.

in college I lived in a dorm that used to be an old hotel. the walls/floors were really thin so you could hear everything that was louder than normal conversation speech. both of my neighbors consisted of girls whos normal speech level was that of someone yelling at a friend 50+ft away but who would bang on our door screaming and yelling with an RA the second we turned any kind of music on or laughed too loud(the RA's hated them too). our upstairs neighbor, later our friends, mustve worn clogs. my roommate and I were really laid back and didnt really mind their noise. I calmly talked to them once or twice face to face in vein. but one night around 2or3am we had had enough with one of these neighbors so I put my amp against their wall (just a 1x10 combo, but remember, paper walls/floors) turned it up and played an open E for maybe 5-6seconds, we heard a scream and then silence. Im sure we woke the whole building, but they were really annoying and it was worth it :D . afterwards, they would politely knock on our door if they had a complaint (which wasnt very often)

I don't get the loud "practice". I never practice through an amp. Haven't ever. When learning songs I'll plug into a little mixer with the tunes through it as well, but otherwise it's me and the bass. That way you hear every bit of sloppiness, as well as the tonal variation that can be coaxed from that particular instrument (you know, with your hands).

I love turning up and making a racket for fun, but you shouldn't have to ever be loud to do your homework.

I live out in the sticks now and the only governor on my SPL is my family - the detached garage comes in handy especially when breaking in new speakers. I don't miss apartment dwelling - I always talked with neighbors right when I moved in, asking them to just let me know if music or late guests were bothersome. It never really worked but I can't think of any good stories...
