Double Bass Grace Designs Felix

As all amps have a power switch it would make sense for the Felix to have one as well. I don't like pulling mains plugs out so I use a three way splitter with its own rocker switches, each one is lit for on. Cost five quid which would probably just about buy you guys an ice cream, so not expensive.

No power switch, but I haven't missed it. It goes in my pedalboard, which has a power strip. I guess you might need one if it were in a permanent install in a studio, but I guess I don't see the problem in a live setting.

Have just finished a month long tour in the UK with the FELiX, blending an Upton Revolution with an Ear Trumpet Labs Nadine microphone. I'm happy to report that this box did the job and then some, especially when it came to notching out problem frequencies in the mic, and preempting any less than awesome audio "engineers."
I love that what is basically a very high quality 2 channel mixer is so travel/pedalboard friendly. The sound is extremely transparent, and I'll add that Michael Grace is a pleasure to work with and very open to communication. DK

I have also taken the Felix on the road with Rhiannon Giddens, using a different backline bass and amp every night. The Felix has done exactly what I had hoped, giving me some security facing different eq problems that I face from hall to hall. It took me a few gigs to learn what this powerful unit can do but I am getting better each day at quickly recognizing problems and fixing them, giving me the best possible sound each night. It is also great for quickly adjusting the different sound from soundcheck to performance. Often a simple tweak between the first two songs in a set is all thats needed to get my sound corrected. Very happy with this product.

I might add that at times, the Felix is not always the answer. If the amp is particularly buzzy the Felix can accentuate that. I had to eschew the Felix yesterday because I couldn't get rid of the backline buzz. Stage insisted the DI goes out of the amp and not the Felix. I have to say, I missed the eq that Ive become accustomed to....

People drive me crazy. I can't tell you how many times I've showed up with my gear that I've saved money for months or even sometimes years to buy only to have them insist I use their $100 DI. You'll spot these folks quickly...they're the first to use every acronym possible and tell you all about how their Behringer X32 has amazing sounding verbs. DK

Just played a jazz gig, 5 piece (female lead, drums, guitar, reed player and upright) with a remic green, full circle pickup, both into the felix blended 50/50 with an upton hybrid (my german flatback is in the shop getting some tlc). Went through a bose tonematch (with the vocalist) and into an L1 ii tower with large sub. Wowsa! Singing and swingin bass sound! Best. Sound. Ever. And we were fairly loud. Cant wait for the next jazz gig. Did get high frequency feedback if i turned the bass to the side but i was only 3’-4’ away and in front of the bose tower and about 30 degrees off Center axis at best. Not ideal, but man did it sound good. Better than acoustic. Loved the fingerboard sounds the remic grabbed. I could even see this mic be used by rockabilly players to grab the clicks and slap sounds with proper eq’ing. Jeepers i could have played for 5 hours straight with that sound and feel. It took about 3 minutes of tinkering during setup to get my eq and notching just right, though well worth the 3 minutes.

I can’t tell you how many times
I’ve had to deal a scenario, where there was no way to use anything but the onstage backline. As a result purchased a
powered MAS 1/8 to use onstage in combination with my Grace Felix. Unfortunately, occasionally they want
you to use their rig.

Been using the Grace Felix like this lately: I have a stereo 1/4 in cord and a mic cable strapped together (the stereo cord goes to the two Yamahiko pickups and the xlr goes to an Ischell) they both go into the Felix. All it take is a touch of one button (the mic/line button on the back ) and I can either have two Yamahikos blended or one Yamahiko and the Ischell. Both combos sound great and work for different rooms. Mostly I use the Ischell and Y because it is just so damn good, but it is great to have such great choices so easily available and already dialed in.

I'm experimenting with some similar, except for your cable idea which I like. I'm using the Ehrlund EAP into Channel 2 of the Grace Felix and the Remic Green into one. So far, so good, what really makes it work is the powered MAS 1/8
For some unexplained reason I get more gain out of the Remic Green with Mikes speaker.

So I'm in the market for a microphone preamp for recording and the grace m101 was one of the preamps in in contention for clean, some of the various neve style amps also but then I remembered the Felix. for just a little more money than the 101 could have something that I could take the gigs , (although I can't imagine being more happy with anything than I already am with the broughton studio one)I would use it with pickups only, I don't try to use mics when playing live anymore. My question is how is this thing as a studio piece of gear for recording? also from Reading this thread I learned about the Phoenix preamp that Rick mentioned earlier in the thread. From what I read it is an amazing preamp for around the same price as the Felix. It is also now in contention

I would like to add one thing to the above post. Currently own a headway. Just strictly speaking from a home recording perspective, would the headway sound similar enough to the Felix to justify going for the Phoenix? I'm not going to be using it for blending two signals and it will mostly just be sitting on my desk so size and durability are not much of a consideration. Also I have an external 48 volt phantom power supply so I would not be using the 12 volts on the headway.

The Grace Felix is essentially a pair of Grace M101’s in one box with some additional features i.e. HPF or Notch, three position impedance buffer, etc. After a close friend of mine heard it in his studio, he bought a pair of Grace M108’s. It also has a 5 year transferable warranty and easily sold ( well probably not at the moment)
To my ears there is a world of difference between the Headway and the Grace. Just my take.

you say its a pair of M101's, but there is only one Mic input correct? remember i am interested in this for recording. also, for recording, how would the grace compare to that phoenix you mention. to tell you the truth, i may be leaning toward the phoenix because it can do clean and you can get some color out of it if you push it, from what i have read. it has neve lineage in its design.

Yes there is only one mic input. I have no experience with the Phoenix, I did see an M101 on sale for $75.00 today you can google that. If I want to record both channels using microphones I have a Radial Stagebug 48 phantom.

in a post earlier in this thread you mentioned that you recorded through the phoenix. how do you use the felix with 2 mics? it looks like the radial has 2 xlr outputs and you just said the felix only has one xlr input

Steve,

I’ve only recorded through the Grace take as I mentioned in my first post. I’m using a Radial Stage Bug SB-48 UB DI into Channel 2 on the Grace if I need two microphones as I mentioned in the second post. The Stage Bug SB-48 UB has one XLR input and 2 outputs a balanced XLR and a unbalanced 1/4”.
