Tom really had no choice. It may not be impossible, but I bet its pretty difficult to play a 12 string bass with your fingers.

Tom really had no choice. It may not be impossible, but I bet its pretty difficult to play a 12 string bass with your fingers.
Hard to beat the fantastic Nate Mendal, particularly on There's Nothing Left To Lose and the second SUnny Day Real Estate album. Also deserving special mention - David Wm Sims (Jesus Lizard), Michael McKeegan (Therapy?)
Just remembered some more that I don't think have been mentioned: Dave Allen (Gang Of Four), Kim Gordon, the dude from the Rezillos (check out Flying Saucer Attack)
Juan did not use a pick with racer-x. All fingers baby. He's double jointed, as was Jaco ( i believe) and I tihnk that contributes to the speed he is able to achieve. Juan does use a pick in some Mars volta songs such as L'via , Viscera eyes and parts of other songs, he's a great picker as well
Joe Lally from Fugazi.
Lou Barlow from Dinosaur Jr, he played some amazing stuff, but you do have to listen hard for it, distorted tone tends to blend in with the guitars.

Must be mainly an American term. Think of the guys who can bend their fingers and other extremities in ways most can't. Some times helps, sometimes hurts. I'm double jointed and it hurts playing upright.

Mike Inez - Alice in Chains
and Rick Savage - Def Leppard. He doesn't ever really come to the fore in their songs but I have (somewhere) a tour manager's video of their 1988 tour and there's him doing some really nice melodic chordal stuff during soundcheck. And i think DL are great

I haven't read every post but I'm sure someone's mentioned Scott Thunes by now. Absolutely incredible tone, melody, musical expertise, personality... and that pick n' slap thing he does is coo!l

In the earlier albums, he had these savage riffs and notes that really made Sodom. Look up Procession To Golgotha and Christ Passion, and you'll see.
Tom Araya, for his sheer speed and ability to both vocalize as well as he does, on top of playing that fast.
Ian Hill from Judas Priest has some very good lines, and Godsmack's bassist uses finger picks, so I guess he counts too.
