A nice booklet ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed]) was published. The text is in French, but the book is loaded with photos, a keeper...

I can't remember the gal's name but she was playing with Les Paul in NYC a few years back at a small club near Central Park. I think she's Australian. She did a great job with Les. Great time playing and nice solos when she got the nod. Les had some schtick going with her throughout the show. It seems like it was kind of a celebrity hang - one of the guys from Howard Stern was in the audience. Maybe Ray or Ed know who I'm talking about.

Since no one has brought her up yet, I think it only right to mention Patricia from the Horrorpops. She may not be as technically proficient as some of the ladies mentioned, but she looks damn good playing her DB, not to mention fronting the band at the same time as playing. That has to count for something.

Anyone into Pyschobilly has to give big props to her for making it cool again.

Carol Kaye does not play double bass. She plays electric bass and guitar. I have learned so much about how to play jazz DB (walking and soloing) from her electric bass teaching methods and this can apply to both electric and upright. Some of her electric jazz work sounds a lot like DB.

Alright!!! Check her out!.

... too bad she does not do middle eastern dance, an absolute must do on the psychoscene since mighty Link Removed started to show this aspect of her talents with Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dollz.

Seriously now: don't you think that Jenelle Sweeney is the ultimate sweetheart ?

I have yet to be fortunate enough to see Scareoline live with BJB. I'm from the west coast, but have sadly relocated to the ultra craptastic province on Ontario where the scene here thrives so much better. (<-- major sarcasm) No doubt about it though, a woman with a DB is instantly that much hotter. Jenelle is no exception there for sure.

Boys & girls: ever heard of Lucille Dixon Robertson ? ...there's a short obituary at the bottom of page 4 of the winter 04 issue of Double Bassist.

Turns out that Lucille Dixon Robertson can definitely be considered as a Great Female Bassist:

She was born in Harlem in 1923, took up DB at school, played in the All City High School Orchestra and studied with F Zimmerman. She also studied bass at the Brooklyn College. During WWII she toured with an all-female big band, the International Sweethaerts of Rhythm. She also participated in forming the first integrated synphony orchestra in the US in 1964 and played with the National Youth Orchestra and, as principal bassist, in the National Orchestra Association.

I was in San Diego at a convention a few years back and this woman was playing her ass off and singing just beautifully at this reception. I talked with one of the band members and asked who she was. It was Kristin. I hope my wife never reads my posts because I have to say I fell in love with her, standing there, listening to her do East of the Sun. It would never work though, I could never be married to someone who played like that. It would be a constant reminder of my own mediocrity. :crying: On the other hand, I could call her a real bitch without insulting her.
