MY favorite is "Aja" by Steely Dan.

TREMENDOUS use of the spaces in the music.

You can, literally, follow any instrument in any song that you choose.

+1 Steely Dan are the masters of simplicity. "Two Against Nature" really illustrate how a lot of simple parts can add up to a complex tune.

Another, "Machine Head" by Deep Purple. I know a lot of people poke fun at "Smoke on the Water", but the album has a lot of great layering.

"Shine" by Joni Mitchell is another excellent one to listen to with good headphones on. There is so much care and attention given to how the sounds are shaped and the way they come to the listener. "Night of the Iguana" and "Big Yellow Taxi" are two brilliant examples of this. Simply marvellous. Add to that Herbie Hancock on keys and Wayne Shorter on sax...you simply cannot afford not to hear this record!

Wicked, one of the best drum and bass creations ever. Not too bass orientated in terms of bassists, but that wasn't part of the spec

One of the CD's I'm listening to right now is SMV-Thunder. If you haven't tried it out (if you're a TB'er you NEED to hear it) do. Also anything by Pink Floyd. Try Donny Iris's Alieea (?) Steely Dan any cd. And how could you ever compile a list without a shout out to The Cowsills?

His best known example is Gustav Holt's - The Planets

This is not a bunch of midi stuff thrown together, but the proper symphonic score painstakingly programmed piece by piece into vintage analog synths with piles of outboard gear and multitracked onto tape. It sounds positively HUGE in headphones.
