Great Punk Albums

I wholeheartedly agree with this. I was never much into punk, but The Clash and this album (their best effort) really stood out from what was around at the time and it still sounds great after all these years. Witty and poignant lyrics, attitude, great songwriting with catchy hooks and melodies, great playing by everybody. (Favourite bass line - "Lost In The Supermarket") This album always shows up in the "50/100/150/whatever greatest rock albums ever" lists compiled in music mags and books, and for a good reason.
Lots of good stuff already mentioned. Since it looks like we are mixing, punk, post punk, etc. Here are three, two of which may be on the fringe but the bass playing is not to be missed:
1. Inflammable Material-Stiff Little Fingers
Everything about the opener "Suspect Device" is perfect punk. The bassline moves and sounds great.
2. In The City-The Jam
Bruce Foxton is always spot on. Excellent energy and monster Ric tone!
3. Unknown Pleasures-Joy Division
Peter Hook's basslines drive this album and band's sound. The creepier side of post punk. Fun and atmospheric.

"Rattus Norvegicus" (1977) by The Stranglers.
The lead singer of this band is the bass player (Jean-Jacques Burnel), and most songs have very nice bass lines.

+1..Malcolm would have been 56 this year had he lived...a very special band The Ruts, in touch with the feelings of the time, one of the social concious bands of the time...not just on a hype but music with a message.

Minutemen - What Makes a Man Start Fires (far superior to Double Nickels, in my opinion, although it doesn't mean Double Nickels isn't weapons-grade awesome also)

Fantastic stuff! NOBODY'S HERO is also great. Any time someone says they like Green Day, I tell them to check out SLF.
Playing Enemy is probably one of the most under rated hardcore bands. These guys threw down and could play their asses off. This video has terrible sound quality, so I recommend checking out their myspace if you really want to hear what is going on but it is a cool video. The drums and bass are some of the best I've ever heard in this genre.
