Great Punk Albums

+1 on Rattus Norvegicus by the Stranglers (BTW: JJ Burnel didn't sing lead that much - but he's a great bass player - should get a nod from the maple/black P brigade)

+1 on In the City by The Jam

+1 on Stiff Little Fingers

You should also consider early Tubes, the first Motorhead album (oh yes it is...), MC5, and early Boomtown Rats. Not strictly "Punk" in the "oi!" type vein, but proto-punk kind of kidney. Also, early Bow-Wow-Wow/Adam and the Ants.

Since most of my favorite albums are already up ... there are some fantastic compilations out there as well. From 3 of my favorite punk labels... The Year in Seven Inches (Minor Threat, Teen Idols, SOA, others), Fat Music for Fat People, Survival of the Fattest (Fat Wreck Chords), Punk-O-Rama (Epitaph).

Anything by The Effigies

The Misfits - Static Age. The bass really isn't anything special, but for some reason it stands out a little more. Maybe it's the way it was mixed? It's a great album in any case.

The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette. Smash It Up Part 1 speaks for itself.

edit: How can I forget?!?! The Stranglers - Black and White. Anything by The Stranglers is awesome, but this album is my favorite

Rudimentari Peni---> Ep's of RP and a very good fast fingers style bassist.

Death "for the whole world" (not the metal band but an all black punk band from 1969-70) good finger style bassist

Minutemen "double nickels" mike watt enough said but every bass player should check this guy out :hyper:

Birthday Party - Prayers on fire or mutiny. a little left of punk but great bass by the late Tracey Pew
every band on the (let them eat jellybeans) comp album.
To me the only thing punk about the clash were yellow teeth.

Agreed! I grew up loving the above bands and many more in the late '70s and early '80s. That Death album is fantastic--they were so far ahead of their time.
