I use a Coles 4038 pretty much exclusively three days when I record, along with ideally an AEA stereo ribbon mic for room sound. I had good results with a 414 in the part as well but the Coles is much warmer and fatter to my ear.

Why I never saw you here on TB is a mystery? A great versatile player and doublebass professor who plays all kinds of music, right here on TB. Anyways. I do think a 414 does a good job and the Coles are substantial but I still think I favor a good old U47 if I can get it. You prefer the ribbons! I think I sometimes find the a wee bit dark in the treble for arco…I use a Coles 4038 pretty much exclusively three days when I record, along with ideally an AEA stereo ribbon mic for room sound. The Sandhill is a great studio mic for bass and pretty much everything. A colleague of mine uses one always in studio and live too with great success. I myself have the Schoeps MK41 but I have been using it only live so far.

Heres a small living room recording with two Sandhills in Blumlein position:
I always thought it was because of him and his instrument....Is this the mic, Antti Lötjönen uses for "his bass sound"?I admired for "some time" now its woody and earthy yet clear and "fast" sound..

Joking aside..
Especially on his record "Quintet East" he sounds really beautiful...

I'm using also a Schoeps MK 41 and it's also an really beautiful and exciting mic... but the Sandhill makes me "thinking"... it would be "very nice" to have an alternative or supplement...HaYes, this is the mic!
Yeah the MK41 works really well, but on some situations the figure-8 might be the better choice. I dont know about the different models unfortunately.I'm using also a Schoeps MK 41 and it's also an really beautiful and exciting mic... but the Sandhill makes me "thinking"... it would be "very nice" to have an alternative or supplement...
Do you know about the differences between the "old" 6011 A and the "new" 6019 A?

That sounds great, Chris! The bass is very clear but still full and resonant. Nice tasteful playing, too! I’d be interested in knowing more about the setup - how far was the mic from the bass, what part of the bass was it aimed at, how was the bass isolated from the other instruments, etc.27439258[/URL], member: 11080"]Here's an example of the C-12 sound from the recording that caused me to start this thread. I have never enjoyed playing long tones so much. The beginning of the track is kind of an ambient ballad thing where you can hear the bass without a lot going on around it, but forward to 3:07 and I just love the way it sits in the mix when everything is kicking. With a lesser sound, I would have played differently for sure, probably played more, but with the sustain and body this mic picks up, there's no need.

Ok... you are "to blame"Yeah the MK41 works really well, but on some situations the figure-8 might be the better choice. I dont know about the different models unfortunately.
"The eagle has landed"...Ok... you are "to blame"I have now ordered a Sandhill 6019A mic...
I am very excited and curious about the comparison with the Schoeps Mk41...

Oh thats interesting to hear, I just assumed the 41 would be better suited with it being supercardioid instead of the wider cardioid pattern of mk4. I even took the MK41 for a test for few weeks before buying but i was so happy with the sound i didnt even think to try the mk4. Now makes me think it would be nice to test and compare.I’ve been using 3 mics; AEA R-84, AKG C14-ULS, and Schoeps CMC1 MK4. Trio format all in the same room with a baffle. I also have the MK41 others mention and find it better suited for quiet live settings. MK4 is much better at resisting bleed from others and also delivers a great tone. I’ll post a rough sample from last month.
Speaking of ribbons, has anyone tried the Samar AL95?

It looks like a fantastic option for the price. I read somewhere that it's on the brighter side as far as ribbons go, which is what I'd be looking for in a ribbon.
I also thought the mk41 would be better suited for the studio and was surprised. I set up behind a small wall baffle with drums and piano in the same room. As I recall mk4 had less bleed coming in the room.Oh thats interesting to hear, I just assumed the 41 would be better suited with it being supercardioid instead of the wider cardioid pattern of mk4.
