One excellent WW2 film that I think no one has mentioned is Mrs. Miniver, starring Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon. Sometimes war movies made while the war is raging can have a powerful immediacy.

Not a film, but a great BBC TV series - Private Schulz, a comedy drama about a German soldier who gets caught up in a plot to wreck the British wartime economy by flooding the country with forged currency. Definitely worth checking out.

I Thought this was a great film. Or at least pretty good. And it's along the same bend in the road.
I have no doubt there was a Hagiographic bent to the film but the fact is thing get scary when nut jobs take over. Remember these were people like you and I who ended up caged like animals.

Europa Europa (not to be confused with Europa which is a Lars Von Trier film ALSO set in WWII)

Its the true story of a jew who joins the hitler youth to avoid getting found out as a jew. It's pretty damn incredible.

Watched that just a week back. Interesting but flawed. Visually striking though, as would happen with Michael Mann. And it has Ian Mckellen.

Not strictly a WW2 movie, but 'A Matter of Life & Death' scores highly with me. You Leftpondians might know it as 'Stairway To Heaven'.

'Mosquito Squadron' - appalling film, but some cracking flying sequences (more than a few of which look to be out-takes from 633 Squadron).

PBS aired it over here back in the days when everything they showed except Sesame Street was from the UK. But if I was to pick among the mini-series, in the American usage of the term, It would be Danger UXB, Private Schulz and then Piece Of Cake.

I've always wanted to see Piece of Cake. I've read the book numerous times, one of my favorites.

Hey - that movie is more than a decade NEWER than some of us. And I agree - and named it earlier, as it's a good one.

Ditto the Great Escape. One of the best.
