Greatest Bass Solos

Ralphe Armstrong - Egocentric Molecules

Invalid Link Removed

The live version isn't the best IMHO, but it's still freakin awesome!

+1

Man, Ralphe Armstrong is a monster! Patricularly on Egocentic Molecules.... I only got to see him w/Ponty once and he blew me away - (unlined fretless Gibson RD Artist)...

isn't the 2nd half of the solo just an engineered inversion of the 1st half?

thats what i heard

Meanwhile, the distinctive bass solo that Simon is seen playing in the aforementioned video was actually recorded by Baghiti Khumalo on his own birthday: a one-measure descending line that, in order to extend the break, was later reversed and played backwards in order to add the ascending line.

"I simply copied the line as originally played to a mono machine and then sync'ed it backwards into the multitrack," Halee explains. "That kind of thing was always happening — 'Let's try it in reverse.' We would wild-track all the time. Anything to make it sound more interesting."

Link Removed, definitely. I like it do much and consider it such a beautiful solo that I practiced it and recorded a humble rendition on video.

Really nice melodic sense!! Really really good!! I don't really think that was improvised, but it doesn't take away from the quality of course!

For the guy who posted some Jeff Andrews stuff, that guy is such a monster player, but I always find funny that he always seems to have his face itchy!

Also, on topic, I vote on the recorded version of The Big Wave, on Tribal Techs' Illicit. A really great one by Gary Willis, and the walking he does on that track too is so tasteful, I really love those first bars in the walk.

Oh, and my +1 for Havona, really great one too.

It's incredibly simple, but I always liked Roger Water's solo at teh beginning of "Hey You". It's very well suited to the song.

That's not Roger Waters but David Gilmour.

CD: Was Roger an effective bassist back then?

DG: He had developed his own limited, or very simple style. He was never very keen on improving himself as a bass player and half the time I would play bass on the records because I would tend to do it quicker. Right back to those early records; I mean, at least half the bass on all recorded output is me anyway.

CD: This is not a widely acknowledged fact.

DG: Well, I think it's been said, but it's certainly not something we go around advertising. Rog used to come in and say, "Thank you very much" to me once in a while for winning him bass- playing polls.

CD: Did you play the fretless bass on "Hey You"?

DG: Yeah. Hmm. Roger playing fretless bass? Please! (laughs)
