Green Tea?

I drink green tea nearly every day. For a while I was on several cups a day (3-4 minimum). Right now I'm on Temple of Heaven, which is supposedly among the highest grade gunpowder green tea available. I want to try sencha sometime, it's a bit more expensive. And I'll reiterate than tea bags to not come close to actual tea leaves, in flavor or in health benefit.

Anyone know a good way to prepare chilled green tea? It's summer and every time I drink tea I get very hot and sweaty (besides the temperature, green tea is also a proven thermogenic - raises your body temperature). Should I just let it steep a few minutes and take it directly to the fridge? How will it taste?

Green tea tastes very different depending on the grade you get. The good stuff is kinda bitter, but you acquire a taste for it. There is a brand called Yamamoto-Yama that has various grades of it. Check this link out:

Try the normal stuff and then A/B it against the Premium or "Special Ocassion" stuff. Very different taste.

I also like "Genmai Cha" which is green tea with toasted rice. It's very good; the toasted rice adds a burnt flavor to it.

I don't know of a "good" way, but during the summer I'll usually drop a couple of ice cubes into the tea after it's steeped for several minutes. I prefer to drink it warm during the summer as opposed to hot. I find that strong green tea tastes very bitter when chilled. The only thing I can suggest is to try it and see what happens.

i usually steep the tea like usual, and then pour it into a glass container and throw it in the refrigerator for a while, then i like to sweeten the tea, and i usually make about 2-3 quarts of it at a time, so i'll throw in about a half cup or a full cup (or anywhere in between) of sugar or a bit of honey, and then shake the container (covered) and then put it in back in the refrigerator :)

Besides Arizona, what's readilly available, at supermarkets and such? I almost definately need premade teas because frankly, either I'm too lazy to make tea, or too busy.
although you can't buy it in large amounts, i really like that Sobe green tea...although i am sure that green tea purists will say how bad it is, i like it for when i am on-the-go (which is rare ;))

Uhhh....I don't know - it's in a green and gold soft package. And it's written entirely in japanese characters, there's nothing in enlish on the packaging...
You should have them send you some gyokuro some time. For straight green teas it's the best, although quite expensive too.

BTW, in the link I gave, you might try some of the "mattcha" powder (Green tea powder sweetened with sugar) on some vanilla ice cream. It's great! (if you don't mind the sugar content).
Matcha doesn't have sugar in it, unless it's something they decided to do here in this country.

You should try making some matcha ice cream in a blender. For anyone who likes green tea, I think you'll love matcha ice cream.

The first time I went to Japan I saw an ice cream stand inside the airport. First thing I ate in Japan; matcha ice cream! :hyper:

I'm a big tea fan, but I can't seem to stick with one kind. I recently had a green tea phase, but when I bought more, it wasn't as good. I think that's more a sign of inconsistency in the product than in my taste sudden;y changing.

Mostly what I get is just the 'Celestial Seasons' or similar brands, so I know I haven't had the really good stuff.

The best one I've found was a sample in another batch of teabags I bought. During that phase I was drinking Earl Gray mixed with some fruit tea, usually black cherry, so I wouldn't have to sweeten it with anything. I would get the wake-up kick from the Earl Gray. But I wouldn't get that nasty bitter taste Earl Gray gets when refrigerated, because the fruit-flavored tea would vut that.

The sample I was talking about was white tea with pear flavoring. OMFG is that stuff good. :hyper: But I can't find it anymore.:scowl:
