Green Tea?

I usually just buy bottled green tea in Japan; my two favorites are Namacha (生茶) and Iemon (伊右衛門)。

The thing that seems so strange to me about westernized green tea is that it's so sweet, whereas if you're used to Chinese or Japanese green tea, which is what I grew up drinking, it's very stringent. Oddly enough the bitter taste I hated as a kid is what I love about it now.

I love green tea. I work at a huge health food store, too, so we have about 80 different green teas to choose from... probably 100 if you count pre-brewed in bottles. For pre-brewed, my favorite brands are Ito En and Honest T. For dry tea, I just get whichever one our tea buyer recommends that week, but Yama Moto Yama is a good brand. I drink it unsweetened when possible.

Heres a new green tea by coca cola and nestea. Envigo. Says it has concentrated green tea leaves.

They ruined it by putting aspertame in it.

I drink the bleberry pomegranate to

Goat milk and Kashi cereal. This cereal has green tea in it

Interesting topic... I didn't really drink green tea until I met my wife. She got me into it. She drinks like 5-6 cups a day, and now I'm not that far behind her. My wife is Japanese and she's from an area of Japan called Shizuoka, which is world famous for high quality green tea. I didn't realize what I was drinking, and didn't appreciate the quality until I tried green tea from different areas or restaurants and I kept wondering why the stuff my wife has her family send her is so good. And I found out, after talking to a lot of Japanese people, that Shizuoka tea is sought after by a lot of Japanese. My wife is now starting to import it on the side. Coincidently, everyone in her family drinks it religiously too. Her grandmother and grandfather on both sides of the family lived into the high 90's too. Her grandfather on her dad's side lived until he was 98. Not sure if it's the tea, but it's the one thing they all have in common. Anyway. My .02.

I've never tried loose leaf, and not sure how to go about it and self bagging. I think I'm going to try finding a local tea house and try to learn.

Interesting info...does your wife order a particular brand of Shizuoka? I looked up this site and might place an order, unless she has a better recommendation.

You know. I'll check when I get home. It's written in Japanese, but it comes in a small cylindrical tin with a light green cap. I'll get the name from her.

I drink green tea in massive quantities, including a large cup first thing in the morning after some yoga and stretching. Can't get enough of it. I am a big fan of chai as well, but that's another story. Being a cheapskate college student, I usually get whatever is on sale at Trader Joe's, so my tastes probably haven't been very well-developed yet.

I'm a big green tea drinker, too. My favorite place to buy tea is adagio (http://www.adagio.com). They have samplers for green/black/other types of tea. You get several small tins of loose leaf tea. That way you can try several different types of tea for a reasonable price.

I've tried their black sampler and am now working through the green sampler. The green sampler has the best tea I've ever had. I never knew there was so much variety in green tea.

I like the bottled iced green teas, but some of them are way oversweetened. Sobe and Lipton green tea bottles have just as many calories as regular soda. Sobe adds a lot of sugar, while Lipton goes the cheaper route and uses high fructose corn syrup (bad stuff). If you like the bottles, it's much healthier to search for the "diet" bottled green teas.
