I’ve been lurking about TB for a few years, mostly for information on tubes and pre-amps. I’m a singer-songwriter guitar player, my partner sings and plays violin/viola. I am questing for low-end texture in our recordings.
Currently I’m running my guitars through an Effectrode tube/compressor chain, which I hear is also killer on bass, so no cab in this chain.
I’m hunting an expressive short-scale bass with tasty electronics to record textures with….I’m thinkin more low end atmospheric sound-design than a strict beat thing, so fretless. And in performance I’m on 6 string guitar so this is mostly about playability and recording.
Though I like a solid organic fundamental tone from the instrument and recording chain, I’m ok with pushin sounds around with plugins, and part of me wonders if a U-bass might supply the foundational expressive signal I’m looking for. U-bass scale played fretless seems a bit daunting to me in terms of intonation and I do love that slidey sound when it winds up where it’s supposed to. So I tell that part of my self to stick to buying less gear of higher quality. And so here I am.
The short scale is about size, weight and creeping shoulder arthritis.
Perhaps an upright electric, but they look really spendy.
Is there another instrument, unbasslike, that I should look into?
Synth is not for this project. I want to keep skin contact.
I live between Anchorage and Seattle, about 2,000 miles from the nearest big music store I think, so your advice and suggestions are most helpful.
