It is sad that there is so little about Greg Reeves on the internet. I met Greg around April 1970, just at the time that he was hoping to get some recognition for his singing and songwriting talents. Greg was around 19 years old at that time, certainly not 14. Apparently Greg made several goes at making a solo album, but none have ever been released. He struck me as a musician to the core, very focused, deadly serious about his art. As for examples of his work, take a listen to Immigration Man by Crosby and Nash, or Southern Man by Neil Young. As Graham Nash has said, you never worried about finding a groove when Greg there. If you are watching this thread, Greg, send me a note. [email protected]

I'm quite sure it's Greg playing on the track Woodstock. Stills doesn't play that hard... it's very Motown sounding. Wooden Ships is Stills playng ... you can hear the difference in style.

As a diehard fan of vintage rock I was reading this thread after just joining this forum and just did a quick search on twitter and found this: http://www.twitter.com/los_demones - interesting! Sounds like Greg Reeves is keeping busy?
I love Greg's playing but I have always wondered if the bass solo in the song "Deja Vu" was actually Stills, The phrasing sounds so like Stephen's.
Saw CSNY with reeves and later with Fuzzy ...night and day -no comparison ..Reeves cooks totally. Check their live stuff on youtube, he's like a young Jamerson unleashed.
Just wandered in since surfing into an album rock internet radio station and hearing this song. I agree, some of the most pleasing melodic basswork of the era. It prompted me to join here and post. A guy with that much talent SHOULDN'T be lost for this long, even if he had drug probs back then (who didn't?)
BTW was that guitar Stills was playing at Big Sur a White Falcon?
Does anybody else think Niel Young should be restricted to playing at LEAST 4 strings at a a time?
It was in fact Steve Stills who played the Jazzy Bass solo on the song Deja Vu, according to the song credits in the David Crosby box set "voyage". The individual song credits are not on the Deja Vu album jacket sleeve. Someone asked what temptations song Greg played on, apparently it was Cloud 9. A great example of how awesome Greg was at such a young age is the song "Everybody I Love You" on Deja Vu, it's very tasty stuff. Also, Southern Man by Neil is another good example.
Well we have to remember that 1969 era for musicians is not like today or even 20 yrs ago. Great players came and went un-noticed or at least never became well known. Back then it may not have been as important to a player, considering the whole scene and industry was in it's infancy of stardom and $$$.
I have heard similar about Greg with the drugs etc and I still count Steven Stills as an ass since I did a few gigs with them as road crew, so I know first hand how he can be and there's alot fo BS that comes out of his mouth .Heck even his guitar tech of last year, a good bud of mine, described it as "Ugggh, whattya gonna do, it's a gig, But I can't wait till it's over !"

IM Maurice Moore from Warren OHIO I played on the last recording that greg played on at BELL SOUND STUDIO in New YORK IN 1977 Larry Kerzon was the manager it was for ATLANTIC RECORDS, IT WAS NEVER RELEASED.
I was born in 1953 I GREW UP WITH GREG HERE IN WARREN OH. AND I NO FOR A FACT THAT GREG IS 3 YEARS OLDER THAN I AM, PLUS I PLAYED ON THE THE PROJECT IN 1977 AT BELL SOUND IN NYC. MY NAME IS MAURICE MOORE, I PLAYED GUTAIR ON THE PROJECT FOR ATLANTIC RECORDS. LARRY KURZON WAS THE MANAGER AND PRODUCER.
Nearly all of what I am reading is far off and untrue. We grew up together and I was at his house when his mother bought him a guitar for Christmas. He is one year older than me, and we went all the way through school together, along with Daisy Duke. We played together in a simple band in Jr high. Gregory was one a genius at playing, and had mastered the guitar in months. His mother then bought him a Fender bass at a pawn shop and that only took no time as well. He hung around my sister's house all the time. He had a white German Shepard named Alolf, and he lived on the next street from him, and practiced his playing with various musicians. Gregory did not join any major band at 14 - 15 years old. He is right here in my year book. Yes he finished high school at Warren Western Reserve and formed another band. It was THEN while the band was opening (1969) for the Temptations at the W.D. Packard music hall in Warren, Ohio, that he was noticed by the Temptations and asked to immediately join with them. He was a little over 18 years old at the time. He left with the Temptations, and I did not hear form him until 1972. He called to say that he was with Crosby Stills, Nash and Young. Gregory's father lived in a room at my maternal Grandmother's house at the time, and now his mother, father and only sibling a brother born in 1951 is also dead. I have now further contact, other than his picture.
Do the math: If he started playing professionally at 14 - 15 years old, he would not have been pictured in the class of graduates if 1968. Gregory is a very smart and intelligent friend that I will always admire. Further... despite delusions or spiritual use of substances. He is not an Apache which doctor. His mother was of the natural colored race, and his father was 100% Puerto Rican. I would love to find him... but musicians form our era back home have reported to me that he was dead. I hope this is not true, as many of us wold welcome seeing him again.

Nice to see some of Greg's old friends/ fellow musicians come to surface here. At some point maybe they can settle the rumors, stories and we can get the real story on Greg and what his life has been.
For me, if you have played on any CSN (Y) recordings you are just as much a contributor as they are, so Greg's musical history is important.

Please keep this thread alive with factual information. I have often wondered what happened to Greg. As mentioned, regardless of studio mystery, he is cooking at Big Sur with CSNY.
David Crosby made a similar statement in a Beg Fong Torres interview in Rolling Stone Magazine. He carefully pointed out that "Deja Vu" wasn't the band's second album, it was the first one for THAT band. CSN with Dallas Taylor wasn't the same as CSNY, Taylor and Reeves.
