Gretsch Junior Jet review

@jpmcbride this is from this forum. Epdo cut it in half and you can see all of the windings.

Is this enough for you? or is there more you can come up with?

I'd like anyone who said it was a humbucker after we proved it a single coil to apologize. But I know that wont happen. I can admit when I'm wrong. Can you?

@mrperkolator So much wrong with this post my friend ... where to start?

(1) I'm very happy to see the experiment concluded and the answer clear. Its a single coil.

(2) I never said it was a humbucker. Go back and read my posts. I said it "looked and smelled like a single coil, and probably was a single coil". I only advocated to complete the experiment so there couldn't be any doubt.

(3) Of course I can admit when I'm wrong. I'm wrong all the time and it doesn't bother me a bit to say it. But what exactly was I wrong about? And what am I to apologize for? Was I wrong when I said it was probably a single coil? Was I wrong when I said I'd like to see it opened up or unwound so we can see definitively?

You might consider calming down a little bit and not taking technical discussions personally. If you get worked up every time someone sees something from a slightly different angle than you do, you'll end up unhappy a lot, and will never learn anything new. Chill out and play some bass.

I cannot say what I wish to your condescending reply.

I'm a little surprised that you, @skycruiser, @BunchyMutt have been able to skirt right up to violating rule 1, yet I'm the one that gets kicked off the main thread for this issue.

Y'all won. I will not post anymore. I am not backing off my opinions. I do not agree with any of your actions or posts. I'm just backing off posting, as it is clear exercise in futility.

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking me to apologize for, but I do think it's cool we know it's a single coil and I appreciate Epdo for cutting his pickup in half

First, I wish people could just respectfully listen to one other. Some folks here want to cross every t and dot every i in order to eliminate their own level of reasonable doubt. That's what juries wrestle with in a courtroom scenario. What is reasonable doubt? It's going to look different for everyone.

Which brings me to my own thoughts on this. The best argument for this being a single coil with no hidden engineering tricks is the fact that someone did find a dual coil humbucker in an older Junior Jet single pickup model. The mini-pickup with the dual coil pattern did exist at some point in the product's history.

No one has found one in the two pickup model yet, but it's reasonable to assume that at some point that's what was supposed to be in there or that's what the designers intended to be put in there and what was spec'd out at the design stage.

Whether it was ever in this model we don't yet know, nor do we know if it was swapped out for something else in the single pickup version at any point, but there wouldn't be any reason to re-engineer the existing pickup for the twin pickup version.

That's my threshold of reasonable doubt, and I'm convinced these are single coil pickups.

Doesnt matter. See below.

I was planning on reviewing the Junior Jet II that I purchased. Plugged the bass in and got a TON of hum with pickups soloed as well as together. No change in hum levels when switching pickups, but it was directional like single coil hum. I did some digging on here and I guess these are single coil pickups with dual magnets (I have some magnetic viewing paper on the way to confirm). Ok... but that still doesn't explain the noise with both pickups together. Decided to open up the bass and have a look. I think I found the culprit. This is quite disappointing, though I'm not going to lose sleep over a bass that I got for a couple hundred bucks.

looks to me like low end lobster , kevys rc and music and all these other you tube guys have gotten a ton of mileage out of this. sounds like they owe gretch a debt of gratitude for the jump in their viewership. this is simple, companies lie, politicians lie, everyone lies at some point about something. you don't like it don't buy it.i own one, i love it , sounds great no hum , no buzz it's fine. if you feel injured by this travesty get the $100 of credit gretch is offering and put it towards some humbuckers. the reviewers who didn't know beforehand about the pickup scam gave glowing reviews on this bass. so, begs the question ,who are the real hypocrites.

When a lie is revealed, it's not wrong to talk about it. Are we supposed to ignore lies?

Well said, I agree 100%

I think to proclaim Gretsch lied about this without proof to justify the statement is a gross misjudgment. A far more likely scenario is that a production change was ordered at some point, possibly to curb costs, and different pick ups went into the assembly. No one told the marketing department and this the promotional copy drafted and approved when the guitar was introduced remained in use.

To lie requires an intent to deceive. I’ve not seen anything to suggest this was the case. I suspect Gretsch simply got caught up in an inter-departmental failure to communicate.

That may be so but the original single pickup model, the 2202 had one so my scenario is still plausible.
Occam's razor points that way. Most people who have been involved with manufacturing will understand that things can break down in such a way that the people responsible for marketing and communications aren't being properly informed.

In this case, a plausible scenario is that there's a memo coming down from on high saying "let's make a 2 pickup version of this thing" and somewhere along the way the humbucker gets spec'd out and the single coils get spec'd in. Probably to stay within a certain price point. But for some reason the people responsible for the ad copy get the memo that says, "it's just the same product with two pickups" and no one thinks to tell them that the pickups themselves were changed.

Does that make it right? No. Does that make it something that probably happens all the freaking time? Yeah.

Most people probably didn't notice because at this price point a lot of people probably didn't care all that much. But it seems oddly paranoiac to ascribe some weird, nefarious intent to this when it's most likely a breakdown of communication between engineering and marketing. I mean, what's the point of being so sly about a product that's being made this cheaply to begin with?

even if they didn't intend to deceive, many people got something different than was advertised. i equate this with buying something at the pawn shop only to find out later it was stolen. yeh you didn't intend to buy something that was stolen, but you still need to give it back. gretsch did the right thing here by offering compensation, and lowendlobster etc had every right to bring it to the public eye. people tried contacting them in private multiple times, and for whatever reason it was never addressed or rectified before it was put into the spotlight.

They did to the right thing by doing what they could to make it right. I'm happy about that. Not sure why it took them so long to acknowledge the problem though, since it was brought to their attention on several occasions.
