Grocery Store Etiquitte

This thread is big so I won't read it all

Lets move outside the store for a moment; THE PARKING LOT! Cars are trying to navigate and there's alleays a fat arsed woman pushing her cart right down the center of the lane! Cars can't get by and crawl along behind. If you dare give a little honk, you get a dirty look. I NEVER see men doing that. Men are always grabbing the cart and leading their woman out of the middle of the road and looking exasperated. Is saying the truth the same as being a misogynist?

Well I'd better qualify my statement anyway: it's not all women that do it. Plenty walk on the edge by the parked cars. But when it happens, it's always a woman. And I have to drag my wife around; I just always grab the cart and lead the way.

I have to drag her out from behind the till into the bagging area so she can review the till tape. I am thankful that she catches mistakes on products that scan the wrong prices: she saves us lots of money. But every time I gotta drag her out of the way so the next customer can settle into the "payment / price screen slot" and get on with their purchases.

I admit that when I shop with my wife, I have to guide her along to not be a nuisance like all of you others have lamented here.

...To annoy the person in front, simply unload tour basket and 'accidentally' make some of your groceries overlap onto the tail end of theirs. Watch them desperately try and slam that divider in as your shopping creeps closer to the finish line.

To annoy the person behind, simply ensure that the only divider available is way out of their reach, but well within yours. Watch them try and will you to put it there...to the extent that they will not unload anything from their trolley, not even with leaving a three foot distance between their shopping and yours. That plastic divider simply HAS to be there before they start...

You are evil! I will have to try those. :p

No patience: At the checkout today the person before me had quite a lot of groceries and with no one bagging quite a mountain was waiting to get packed. The conveyor was empty but even if I put my groceries onto it wouldn't have sped the process up at all. So I waited a bit. The woman behind me stepped up, grabbed the plastic divider and set it at the back of the conveyor. I still waited. She say's "you know, you could start putting your things on the conveyor." (??) I said "yeah I could, but is it going to make a differance with everything before me that has to be packed?" Ohhhhhhh.....she was hot! Too damn bad. I waited until the clerk had one more bad to pack and even then it only tookl me about 30 seconds to load what I had onto the belt. But boy, once that belt started rolling she was practically throwing he stuff up there. Like it's really going to speed things up! I encounter this a LOT at the grocery store.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Why can't people understand that the movement of the groceries from the cart to the conveyor is generally not what holds up the process?

The only time I have ever cursed at a stanger in public happened over this. Lady behind me was in such a hurry that in order to make room for her stuff on the belt she pushed up my groceries using the plastic divider.

It crushed a loaf of bread I had on my side. I was having a bad day and for sure overreacted but still people should have more common courtesy, respect, and common sense. Once you demonstrate that you will not show these to me, you will for sure not get it shown to you by me.

Are trollies in US supermarkets not "hired" as they are in the UK and Ireland then?
We deposit a 1or 2€ or £ coin to release the trolley from a chained together line and then get the coin back when the trolley is returned and re-chained - very few people leave trollies around the car park IME.

That, although very effective and would probably clean up a lot of parking lot clutter, wouldn't fly here. Here in 'Murica, we like to rabble!

till tapes, trollies, £ coin, you foreigners talk funny :D

Corollary: This also applies to EVERY SINGLE FRICKIN' ITEM in the store.

I'm 41. I wore out my Floyd concert shirt about 20 years ago. :( I usually wear dress shirt and slacks into the store, and I get asked if I work there nearly every time.

Rule: Am I wearing a name tag? Then no. I don't work here.

I've answered/spoken to the nasty grumpy geriatric people in a very enthusiastic-sounding Saul Rosenberg/Jerky Boys voice. Actually got LOL's from the other shoppers.

I wear my Grateful Dead shirt when I shop. They stay away from me....or order on-line and have them deliver. Problem solved!

Your whole OP is just one big rant about how ppl are slow.

The supermarket building design encourages freedom to change direction.

Enjoy it.

Be kind, please rewind.

No it's not really....

1) is about leaving extra space and not blocking whole areas so others can also get what they want (I always allow some space so others can get their items without me blocking)

2) is about people not taking out their anger on others. No matter who you are, making demands and getting nasty at someone for something they have nothing to do with is rude. No?

3) is about people being courteous. I walk to the side of the aisle so that others may pass, always. It's just like driving...I would think that it's common sense to not block the whole aisle when you're slower and ignore people saying "excuse me" trying to get by.

4) same thing - it's about having courtesy. I have a large family and we sometimes stop and debate what to get, etc , but I make sure that we're out of the way when we do so. We move off to the side as to not block traffic.

5 and 6 are just me being a douche as by the time I deal with 1-4 I'm already cranky. I admit it.

But otherwise, I'm always considerate of others when shopping. I don't block people in, I make sure my cart is out of the way when I need to grab something, I don't bump people with my cart, I walk to the side if moving slow, I don't block aisles, and I return my cart to the cart return area when done. A regular boy scout I is.

I really cant understand some folks in this thread though... I'm perplexed by the notion that - because people being inconsiderate to others irks me, that I am somehow rude for being irked by it...? I guess then that if me thinking that people should generally be more considerate to others when shopping is rude, then OK I'm rude. Totally.:)

First world problems. The grounds are not paved with rainbows and on the trees is not cotton candy.

You live in jersey, you should have a callous for this **** anyhow! :D

I'm siding with Relic on most everything.

It's a sever lack of common courtesy he's talking about.

The aisles are laid out like a road. You have 2 lanes. You don't abandon your cart on the divider.
People are going to slow down, stop and decide on the merchandise they actually want. No problem.
Pull over to the side.
Make your "grocery store footprint" as compact and as efficient as you can.

When people just stop dead, and stroke out for 5 minutes while you are "excuse me'ing" them do death, that's just selfish.

Parking lot and carts. The real issue is, other than the cart return, there is nowhere you can leave them, that is not in the way of someone parking or driving. Just take it back. It's 30 seconds of your life, most of the time, I end up giving it away on the way back to the return at the store.

Farting in the aisles though, that's just fun. I make a special point of owning the Greeting card aisle. :D

I put into practice the "adding items to every abandoned grocery cart I see" rule.
I approve.
I hope the dude who left his cart at the intersection of a produce section aisle and main traffic way, enjoys his Habenero and Bread Crumb container. :smug:

I'll now be packing a couple of random items with me at all times. If I get to give them away, I win. If I cant, well humanity wins and I will pay for them, or put them back. No employee restocking allowed. Seems only fair.
