Growly pickups! Who makes some?

I think a big part of "growliness" comes from the pickup position.

+100! Pickup placement is just as crucial and impactful as the pickup design.

My favorite "growliest" pickups are Ken Smith exposed-pole soapbars, Bartolini Classic Bass dual-coils, Aguilar DCB, and Delano dual-coils. Did I mention that I like dual-coil pickups???

After the pickups placement, the type of the body, like walnut, can help to bring out the growl more.

But everybody understands the term growl diferently. For example for me a Presicion doesn't growl, a jazz with the bridge pickup favored is when growl happends for me. I call it "rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr"

Yes I think of growl that I like is in the lower mids. Some people think it is fret rattle in the upper range but not me. I will also say the DiMarzio model P and J both have killer growl, at least from the videos I have seen.

I absolutely agree with you. Growl - which I LOVE - is all about low mids. Grind - which I'm not much into - is all about upper mids.

+1 to position being an important part of it, but I'm going to guess that there are other factors like magnet type and other elements of pickup construction. Single pickup EBMM instruments are all growly to varying degrees (at least to my ears), but we also see Rickenbackers as being considered growly, and Warwicks too...very different pickup types and locations!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned EMGs. Both my Modulus (dual soap) and old Spector (reversed P and J) growled like no other, and both had EMG pups. Check the link in my signature and tell me if you consider the bass tone growly or not. That was my Modulus DI'd with only a compressor between it and the board.

I listened to your song and it sounded great and yes your bass tone is growling! I have watched/listened to a jazz pickup shoot out on YT and the EMG JVX sound great and growly. I like them better than the standard pro series they make. I have a set of the standards and they a strong but too clanky for my taste.
