Double Bass Grr!!!

OK. Was Moses around too or did he have the night off.

Man ... Papa T ... You never seize to make me Smile So Big :D As Usual !!

Now .... What was the subject ?? OK .... Now I remember ... ;) Sorry you had trauma Fingers but it sounds like you are digging yerself out of the hole.

I ain't even remotely-close-to-you fellers league playin-wize. But after I bought an M-Line off Mariachi in The-Greater-Chi-Town-Area and hooked 'er up to my Coda Series III (your Clarus with frills ... an amp-speaker combo) .... I'm pretty happy with what I can do. Soft or loud .... Bad room or Good room .... I'm starting to figure out what to do ... especiallly with the AI HPF / Notch / EQ settings.

The M-liner is a fine cab and if you can't make that box sound good-an-loud in pretty much any setting with'n your upright ... Then ... Well .... I would say ... There are some other issues with your amp / pre-amp head / pup / mic / bass / strings / technique to deal with.

The only trauma was messing with something that was working for me ( the GK). Still using it but now I have THE POWER. Not only have I dug, out I am building a tower right now to reach the heavens... Sorry I couldn't resist.

Gig 3... test passed... though I barely needed an amp tonight and that thing at 400 watts was overkill. Still sounded nice at lower volume.

Gig two in the books.

This was the one where the M-Line design really needed to shine. The room is large with two story ceilings. The stage is small and there is a grand piano on the stage. The drummer sets up immediately to my left with both of us pretty much against the wall.

The M-Line passed with flying colors. The M-Line (with the AI) gets really loud. Big room - test passed. Because of the side-ported design the drummer said he could hear me really well and, more importantly, I could hear myself really well. This was maybe a more important test. Awesome.

That's what I'm talkin' 'bout! It's really the best cab I've ever used for DB. I love that feature of the side ports as well. That cab along w/ the AI's HPF has a way of really making the most of crappy sounding room. And yes Virginia, it really can get pretty darn 'stupid loud'.

But at the risk of giving you more GAS, Marc, I have been enjoying the Wizzy 10 since getting one in Jan. It sounds wonderful on those "I almost don't need an amp" gigs thru the 'moderate vol. in a medium room, load in from hell' gigs.

Years ago I did the 'GK in the bag over my shoulder thing' for a good long time. Kinda heavy on the shoulder, but convenient. Can sound ok, but ultimately cold sounding IMO, especially as you turn up. And when they break they really break. If ya don't mind plugging in a couple of wires the Wizzy 10 is way better (w/Clarus, Focus, WW, etc.) and the 17lb. load-in is blissful:smug:.
They should call it Euphoric Audio:hiding:.

Still haven't tested the Wiz 10 ontop of the Wizzy M for stupid, stupid loud on an actual gig yet. I haven't had to w/ the M-line being so loud by itself.
I love things that really work :bassist:.

If you sell the Aggie and the GK and buy a Wizzy 10, you'll pretty much have everything for any situation and you'll still put a bit of $ back in your pocket for that college fund.

So I played one of the worst sounding (but really fun) rooms in the area. I have used a few different setups in that room because I have never had great success with tone there. The bass is really boomy in that room with a strange mid-bump. Even the drummer said his drums sound strange in that room. The M-Line was the best of the lot but the stage sound was still strange. I guess even the magical M-Line still can't tame the worst stages.

The good report was that a friend in the audience said the bass tone was great. Big and full without being boomy and very focused and clear.

I guess that's one of those gig that I just have to suck it up and play.

Like I've said in threads 'bout the M-line, sometimes on the stage in crappy rooms, especially when standing to one side of the cab, it can sound deceptively muddy. I find when this is the case it usually always sounds perfect out front. The Chris F. method of checking your sound from out front by using a long inst. cable is a good thing whenever possible. Also I tend to rely on the HP filter of the AI more in a crappy sounding room in an attempt to zero in on the 'good' stuff in the tone spectrum and filter out the junk that tends to boom and bounce around too much.

Ofourse ther are two other factors that can make a crappy room go from tolerable to horrible;
1) excessive stage vol. from the band and
2) audience/patron noise/cacophony- always worse on a bad room.

The louder we play the louder they talk.

I have a regular Wizzy 12. The other night, just out of curiousity, I decided to plug my GK 1001RB-II into the Wizzy and I was really blown away at the great tone from that setup.

I would think that the MBE150 head into a Wizzy would be a great rig. If the new GK 500 watt micro head gets released this summer, I think it's going to be a hit.

What did you think of the tone of your GK plugged into the Wizzy-M?

Sounds great. The MB series combo is just a little underpowered to justify carrying that much stuff though. Plus the Wizzy is 4 ohms so you have to shut off the internal speaker on the combo. If you just had the head I think you'd be very happy though. Part of that I'm loving about the Clarus is it weighs 4 pounds. It is so small I have little panic attacks thinking I've forgotten it.

I'd want to hear a GK MB150 amp and Wizzy 12 together before making any decision, since both have pronounced peaks in the midrange. The MB150 amp is voiced specifically for the combo's internal speaker and / or the GK 112MBX speaker, which don't have much in the way of upper mids on their own. The Wizzy 12 OTOH has a lot of character in the upper mids and in my experience sounds best with a more neutral amp like an Acoustic Image. Even then you can really hear the Wizzy's strong midrange presence. The MB150 and Wizzy 12 together might be too much of a good thing.

I have tried my old GK 400RB (which is also voiced as all GK amps are, although not as dramatically as the MB150) with my Wizzy M, and it was kinda borderline really. It really rocked but definitely not a "my bass only louder" kind of sound.

I've tried the two together in my living room and it is not bad. I was able to get a real good tone with a little eq work. I was just comparing my AI to the GK. The GK eq is much more effective than AI one but that is not saying much. The AI sounds pretty nice flat or using the eq to take bad stuff out rather than good stuff in.

I have been using my Sansamp in line with the AI and really digging the way it warms up and adds a little grit to the Realist.

I guess when there is an amp and pickup involved I don't try for a 'bass only louder' tone. I try for an amplified tone that sounds like a DB to my ears. I know that sounds strange but I try for a big, fat, warm, woody tone not necessary MY bass as it would be heard through a mic. I do send a mic only signal to the pa is there is one though.

I think Dave Holland has a very amplified tone when you hear him live but I love the live sound he gets and he can really compete with Nate Smith, Billy Kilson or Jack DeJohnette none of whom are quiet drummers when they open the flood gates.
