You don't know how good that is to hear from someone. My72 Starfire1 pickup is missing the chrome cover. In order to replace it I've had to purchase a 74 Jet star neck pup. My 72 has the Deep/Hard toggle. That is what got me thinking maybe it was a bit different.
Yes, the switch seems to cut out about half of the volume on the bass now. Maybe more coming downstream to the switch with a different pup might give a bit more?
Thanks Axstar. That is great info though i must confess that I would I have to go back to school to have a complete understanding of the circuitry end of this. So, does this mean that the output of the pickup first goes through the deep hard switch?
If you’re replacing parts, I highly recommend having a setting at least where the pickup isn’t routed through a cap. Those pickups sound great, and I feel that you’re going to be missing out on their actual tone otherwise.
Apologies, I've been confusing the 'Deep/Hard' switch with the earlier 'Suck' switch that was on '60s Starfire basses. The Deep/Hard switch routes the output of the neck pickup through either a 220 k resistor (deep) or a 3.3 nF capacitor (hard). The hard setting will have a roll off in the bass, whereas the 'deep' setting allows the bass response of the pickup to pass, but for whatever reason bogs down the output of the pickup with a fixed resistor, which is probably causing the volume loss you report. In the other setting the bass roll-off will also probably come across as volume loss. Neither setting gives you the full, unadulterated sound of the neck pickup.
No inductors as far as I can tell!
So in short, yes! The neck pickup is routed through the Deep/Hard switch before it hits any of the other circuitry. I would bypass the 220 k ohm resistor so that the 'Deep' setting is purely the raw output of the pickup at full volume. You could solder a jumper wire over the resistor and keep it there, just to keep the original circuitry in there.
