Right. I'm wondering which alternative they are using.Obviously not Brazilian rosewood at that price. I think the guitars are Indian rosewood of some sort so this is probably the same.
Just a guess but its probably whatever kind of rosewood Fender was using on their fretboards until recently. All rosewood has export restrictions now so they must've have some left over.
I’ve played both. There was ridiculous fret sprout on the jazz bass. But both played well and sounded like typical American Professional Fenders.
Maybe using up old stock, but why not make fingerboards instead? Perhaps some bright young MBA figured out that they could switch to a cheaper fingerboard wood now, shaving costs on all "rosewood fingerboards," and they sell the remaining Indian rosewood as necks with a significant uncharge? The result being obvious ($).
That's a wild guess, so I'm still wondering which wood it is exactly that is used for these necks, and is it restricted?
I haven't kept up with the CITES thread very much for some time, because it became a stinky troll nest, but I gather restrictions have kicked in as more species are being over-exploited.

I've asked Fender to clarify which wood.
THIS is what they should have produced!...

My point exactly!Bacchus never fails to amaze me.
Even when it comes to pickguards they're one up on everyone else.
Seriously, you'd think Fender would try something like this.
I mean, black or white or tort again and again and again?
Not to mention the black steel control plates look great, too.

To Jim Carr.
Those Bacchus basses aren't stained.
Make fun all you want.
Only Fender stains ash and calls it walnut.
Everyone else does the real thing.

Shouldn’t it have a really dark tort pickguard, though?
