I think the key word is "accountability". OP is still essentially blaming GC when all he had to do was take 10 minutes and figure out the used market value of the item.

When I sold my big amp to GC recently, they tested every channel, knob, etc. I not only expected that, I welcomed it. Once you basically sign it over to GC, they're responsible for it so they're going to ensure it works. If they said to me "Not interested", while it would have sucked, I wouldn't complain about it.

The other thing about condition is that what if it looked great but smelled of cat urine and they promised you $X? Or it was in OK condition but only farted when notes were played? All possibilities. I'm sure that wasn't the case but you get the idea. That's why they're not going to give you numbers on lots of things they do not know. Pictures don't tell the whole story and they don't know you from Adam or Eve.

They gave you a fair offer. You just thought it was worth more than it is and it's clear you still do.

I wouldn't bother escalating at GC - locally or nationally. You're not going to get the answer you're hoping for.
I'm not expecting any answer. It is worth more. That's why I didn't take the offer. My opinion! It's one hell of a cab. Heavy but I'll keep it. This cab will outlast any other cheap junk built in Asian countries. USA built with aircraft quality build technics! Just another day of hating! JS

Is GC obligated to buy your used gear? (No)
Never said they were! I just asked for a ball park quote over the phone. The most they would possibly pay as I found out that they use eBay for ball park prices using pictures only. As mentioned to many times!! And to clarity the dude that gave me the offer was a super friendly dude! Bottom line I only wanted to have a heads up of the most they would pay. And maybe they thought I would give in because I didn't have the balls to load it back in my van. Letting an awesome Mesa cab go for only $250 was not going to happen. $300 was still a low offer in my opinion only. There are people that are getting away from the big stuff and want to play through 35LB combos etc then there are people that wants a full big sound with a road worthy road ready rig! There's a saying, "if you can't hang with the big dogs, stay on the porch"
LOL

One thing GC could do is give one of those really fast fine print read-outs stating they are under no obligation to give you the quoted price that was given over the phone once you arrive in-store. But, I’m sure there is a reason why they don’t do this. No doubt it’s due to unethical people, ruining the system and such.

To to have it! I have multiple rigs!
Crikey, I can feel that rumble in Australia!
I'm done! I don't expect sympathy! I'm just sharing my thoughts and experience as I expect and respect everyone's own opinion which makes for good forum bass talk! Rant over! I stand my ground with lesson learned! I still don't hold grudges! They are just doing there job and I respect that!

So, what do you do now? Selling it on eBay or reverb where shipping will cost more than the cab is worth is a non-starter, IMO. Selling locally on CL or FB, you'll have to waste more time with flakey buyers than you did with GC and maybe get a few bucks more. Maybe. It might have been better for you to suck up the $50 just to be rid of your outdated gear.

He said he's going to keep it. See below.

Your valuation of the amp is not in line with market price. If you tried to sell it, you'd be lucky to get what GC would have charged (about $400 give or take) and that's assuming they'd find a buyer.

It is your call in the end and you made the call you are comfortable with. Cool. It just sounds like you have some kind of emotional attachment to it. Use it in good health for many years to come.

FWIW, the MarkBass stuff I think is made/assembled in Indonesia. So why are you putting down Asian-built stuff if that's what you were thinking of buying?

A business can be deemed "evil" solely on the basis of how ignorant of the business and market the utterer is.

There was a pawnshop show out of Detroit that had a potential customer that came in with a beat up push lawnmower. The guy said his lawnmower was worth $200 and that's what they were going to pay him.
:hmm:

If you don't take the initiative, even with the vast amounts of information out there, you can come to conclusions based on nothing more than what you pull out of your hindparts. There are people who genuinely seem to believe that...

A business will give you what they'll sell a trade-in for.

Businesses have expenses?

A poor setup or dead strings equals bad bass.

Who cares what they have to do with your trade-in after they accept it?

Everyone is trying to screw you.

Over the years the amount of phenomenal used deals I've found at Guitar Centers across the country is mindboggling. They typically don't try to make a killing on used items IME. If you want to maximize your return on a used item, understanding that GC is a middleman and needs to turn a profit too, sell it yourself. Don't want to go through that trouble? Trade it in... and expecting the same amount is just naive. Getting angry over being naive is not a good look.

I don't know how, in the year 2020, people are still surprised about the trade-in offers that they get from Guitar Center/Sam Ash/Music-Go-Round. They're super transparent, and have been for at least 30 years. For those that still don't know, here's the formula:

If you want cash: take the USED price that Guitar Center will sell it for on the floor, and multiply it by 0.4. You get 40% of their asking price.

If you want to trade in: take the USED price that Guitar Center will sell it for on the floor, and multiply it by 0.5. You get 50% of their asking price.

That's it. It is NOT a good deal, but it is what fits into their wholesale/retail model. You should only do this if you're desperate to get rid of the gear. You will not get anywhere close to the market value of the piece, but no one ever said you would. For the love of god, do not drive 3 hours to a Guitar Center and expect that the brand new floor price of your gear is a factor in the offer you're going to get.
