I've been on the lookout for a birth year bass (1980), and I found a Fender P on guitar center's used site that looks like it could fit the bill. I'm a fan of the natural/maple combo (even if it's been stripped). But I know nothing about the quality of instruments from this era.

What's the perception of 1980 Fenders, and is this a reasonable price for something like this?

I don't know a ton about Fenders,
but that bass sure seems to have a lot of neck pocket gap on both sides.

Not worth its price value, just wait for a sucker to buy it and have em deal with all those problems.

That's very expensive for a 1980, plus what was mentioned about the neck pocket gaps. Makes me wonder if the body and neck are both original as well as what else is going on with it. Again, very expensive for a 1980 anyway, even more when you add on the tax and perhaps shipping.

I’ve owned plenty of 1978-80 fender P basses probably 10+. That gap is standard , very worn out jigs were used to cut bodies. It wasn’t until I think 1982 they corrected all that.

Too high for a refin. Toledo had a nice burst one somewhere between 78-82 for about the same money. Nice player.

I just looked at the pic and personally don't see anything that would lead me to believe it is refinished.

Overall it's a nice pbass. Sounds really good. Already has flatwounds. The neck pocket is solid despite the gaps on both sides. Only thing I noticed was some fret wear. Real, solid player.

Good price on a '78 Precision bass at $999. The paint won't be everyone's cup of tea, but could fit certain genres or be refinished:

Depends on who wants to buy it. I wouldn't go over $400 for it and even then I would really have to WANT a 78 P... but I'm not an average player and that bass wouldn't be my thing.

Geez, take it easy. It's Sunday. I posted that as an FYI for anyone looking for that period P bass. Most of them I've seen are in the 1400-2000 range, even with the duncan pickups and badass bridge. It's not my cup of tea at all, (including the finish), and I wouldn't buy a 70's Fender bass anyway but there are those that like them.

We normally just post in this thread to alert others if we see something on GC that is rare or a possible decent deal. According to you, perhaps I shouldn't be doing that.
