Guitar Hero IS a musical instrument

How long did the fad take to come to a stage?

David Crowder Band, a Christian eclectic mix of techno, rock and bluegrass, has altered a Guitar Hero controller to play music. Be warned if you've never seen David Crowder... :)

This is from the Christian music festival, Creation. I went in 97 and it's an amazing week of music on a mountain in Pennsylvania with tens of thousands of campers.

Will it replace analog instruments? No, I don't think so.

I guess its kinda ok cool that the drummer tweaked the little toy guitar thing. However...its still not really playing guitar. Its just a gimmicky little thing. I wish there had been more of the song to listen to, so that it would be easier to judge the musical quality. From what I heard, my first thought was, "Man, that'd probably sound a lot better if he just played a real guitar on it."

There are bars who host Rock Band or Guitar Hero nights, rather than have actual musicians. *That* aggravates me. Aw heck, why beat around the bush? It makes me mad. Worse than karaoke.

But I'm sure kids love to see stuff like that. And I imagine he's trying to reach younger people, so that might be a good gimmick to get them to pay attention. I just...I just don't much care for it, myself.

I hacked something to do this on a Mac about two days after I got GH.

You just need a PS2->USB interface (about $5 on ebay). It looks like a generic HID class device, so you don't need to write a "real" device driver - just a translator. Once I figured that out, I set it up to generate Midi notes. Once you're in Midi land you can feed that into whatever software you want.

The second guy seems to have set up some pretty complex mappings, but thats' really just simple stuff you can do in any squeuencing package.

Drop me a PM if anyone wants to try it, and I'll email you the software (Mac only).

Just click on the link on YouTube for more David Crowder. You won't find a whole song with the Guitar Hero Controller since they're filmed on cell phones, but I found some with more of the song.

Cool! I liked the song's structure. Couldn't understand the words too well, but I'm sure there's better vidis of him on the 'Tube.

I'll check 'im out! My cousin's son (a budding young guitarist) loves old-school rock, and he also is trying to get up a Christian rock band for his church. It would be fun to be familiar with some of these songs, so we can jam on them when I visit. He'd be thrilled to be able to go from Led Zep to Crowder to The Who and back again. :)

Future Man does that at every single Flecktones gig...

(this is just the synthaxe reinvented)... pretty cool that he actually did that though, but a midi controller with so few keys seems kinda useless. Maybe you could use it as a foot pedal to shift pitches or something... :-p

5 keys would give like 120 different combinations maybe its less I don't know my maths on this is a little rusty. But there's flexability to be had with just 5 keys. Plus you could load different programs per song. As the dude said it's about how much effort you want to put into the programming
