Guitar player rage quit cuz his amp got dinged

I love the old 100W Marshall Heads, however, The only time I'd get cranky is if someone threw it or dropped it! Especially if it's been on for even a few minutes. That said, I've never owned one, but have played through one for many years. Stuff happens, My bass case has dings all over it and it's only been in proper use for a couple of years. All of my instruments have dings in them despite being treated with kid gloves. To me, they are tools to do a job, and, as long as their ability to perform their task is not hampered......well, you get the idea. Sounds like you dodged a bullet! But the local 14-piece horn band I'm in, there's 4 singers and 6 horn players. Good Grief, Charlie Brown! The Diva factor is huge with that bunch. Fortunately, I'm a hired gun there, so the leader has to deal with the BS who (A) can be a diva himself, but (B) handles all the diva-ness quite nicely, I must say. Unfortunately, that band is all in 40s to mid-70s. We/they are seeing all but one singer (himself 74 YO and singing and performed better than ever) "age out" of the band with various age-related ailments and 3 of the horn players are having similar issues. I've spoken with the leadsman a few times about this (who's seeing friends he's played with for 40-50 years) have to stop performing. At this point, if a gig for that band gets booked, we'll get local folks that can half-way read and an extra singer or two, have a rehearsal, and carry on.

Actually, being 64, seeing this breaks my heart and I give thanx to the Good Lord Above every day to be able to play relatively pain-free.

The wife of one of the guitarists on my band joked a few months ago that between us, we might be able to get one fully functioning person. I was relatively healthy - a week after that, my knee gave way, still not quite right now.

• Me, bursitis in knee, tennis elbow (aggravated by lifting heavy objects), and I sometimes need to wear a back belt after my back went after the first gig out of lockdown
• Male lead singer - has M.E, and has recently torn a ligament in his knee so it out of action for at least half of the christmas gigs, and can't drive for about 8 weeks at least.
• Female lead singer - history of backpain. Rum and coke usually gets her through the night
• Drummer - had covic quite bad and is still suffering with fatigue, brain fog and back pain issues
• Guitarist 1 - had a detached retina a few years ago, type 2 diabetic and recently had a cataract operation so was out of action for a few weeks.
• Guitarist 2/keyboard - has been waiting for a date for an operation on his foot, which has just come though - right during our Christmas period and won't be able to drive for 6 weeks. So we've had to cancel one of the gigs so far. He also need a cornea transplant.
• Soundman (guitarist 2 dad). He had covid quite bad and has left him not in the best of health. He's also had an eye operation to replace the lens in his eye which didn't go to plan. This has left him unable to drive in the dark.

Guitar player got a new head a few weeks back. 100 watt Marshall tube head. He left it at the rehearsal spot (drummer's basement) since the day he got it.

After our first practice with this new head drummer offered guitar player a moving blanket to cover up the amp when not in use. Guitar player refused the blanket.

So last night as we're finishing rehearsal, guitar player picks up his beer off of his new head and notices a small ding in the tolex. He goes apeshiz, accuses me and the drummer of intentionally damaging his amp, and sabotaging the band. We tell him to piss off, and he loads up his gear (two trips) all while mumbling under his breath.

After he leaves me, drummer, and singer talk about what a crybaby this guy is, and it's probably time to fire him. About 5 minutes go by and drummer gets a text. It's guitar player informing us that he's quitting. We all had a good laugh.

I immediately walked over to the dry erase board and erased all the old, tried classic rock songs we're sick of playing. Within 5 minutes we had a new set list, mostly consisting of songs we wanted to cover but guitar player refused.

This band had become somewhat of a chore for me, but now I'm looking at it with renewed vigor and passion. Drummer and singer feel the same way. We're all really excited to work on the new setlist and find a new guitarist.

You're better off without him. Putting drinks on a head is dumb; a spill can wreck it.

1. The guitarist has a brand spanking new amp and he puts his beer on top of it during rehearsal? )- and then goes ape-fecies when he finds a nick in the tolex?)

Worries about a nick in the tolex while setting his beer atop the head. Where it couple possibly tip over and spill down inside the amp through the ventilation grill on top of the head.

Besides Marshall tolex is a like Ampeg tolex. If you even look at it it rips, tears, or nicks. Chances are high he nicked it himself when he loaded it into the practice room. Consider it a blessing that he quit and move on.

Yep. And when I use my headstock up the back of a keyboard player's head for playing basslines with his left hand, well... some of these keyboard player's heads are hard enough to leave a ding.

I've seen both ends of the spectrum. One guy used to secretly remove the fuse from his 'Earth' amp (east coasters?) so no one could use it while he wasn't in our (private) rehearsal space. Another who's 60's Fender blackface twin fell out of our van when unloading for a recording session. Required like a 70% structural rebuild. While it still hurts to think back on it, he did not lose mind on the guy who dropped it or hold him accountable. Accidents happen.
