Guitarists who HATE Jimi Hendrix.......

Ever hear someone say, "yeah, so and so is the Jimi Hendrix of......."

He's a fricking household name. Not that that alone is proof of soul, but he sure as hell didn't get to be a household name by kissing Janet Jackson or writing depressing song lyrics to be interpreted as deep and meaningful by teenagers. (Example: Songwriter-"I am so cold and empty inside"
Depressed teenager-"oh holy crap, I relate to that therefore it is deep and meaningful!"

I think Hendrix is seen as hard to play because when they try to transcribe his solos or whatever, they try to make it correct. eg, Woodstock, off his face on LSD or what not, playing whatever those massive hands (another reason for his out there sound) would hit. He was like, yeah whatever works man.

Yeah, I have a friend who primarily listens to technical hardcore, grind core, and "crust" punk, and other really bad s***. And he too refuses to give credit where credit is due. "The Beatles suck." "Pink Floyd sucks." "Ion Dissonance is better than Rush will ever be." Ect.

Really REALLY gets aggrivating from time to time.

And this happens for a lot of things besides music. Man, no wonder no one really likes him anymore.

Hendrix is a great musician- sometimes i might get a headache from some of his music, but i still like it. Another guitarist who get less acknowledgement for his skills is Mick Ronson who played with Bowie and Mott the Hoople. Ronson wasnt a flashy player and didnt do these oh so exstravagant solos, but he did write some awesome guitar stuff, best guitarist bowie ever had, can beat SRV to the dust. I think alot of that Punk hating classic rock thing originates with the early punk bands. Didnt they diss on all the 60s and 70s acts of the time for publicity. Though secretly i think bands like the clash and sex pistols did like bands like Hendrix, Zeppelin and the sort.

Funny you should mention that. By today's standards, Alvin would no longer be considered a "fast" player. However, I can definitely imagine the listeners at the time thinking so.

One of my favorite musicians of all time is Lester Young. He can absolutely rip his horn when he gets going, but he also plays soem of the most musical and tasteful melodies I've ever been exposed to. A class act, he is.

I would interested and hearing some of the guitarists you think are better. Also, what are you rating them on: speed, persona, technique, cool "licks", etc?


I think that many people can play faster, more technical stuff than he could; but at the cost of the soul he put into his music.

Ex. David Gilmour/Leslie West/Hendrix have all played great solos that practically drip soul/emotion/energy out of your speaker. While the "technicans" who can play circles around them seem to lack self control, i.e. knowing when the music suffers because they are trying to throw the fifth solo into that particular song.

Ok, here goes..... Steve Hackett, Steve Vai, Mick Thompson, Malcolm Jones, Steve Luckather. I could go on, the list is endless.

I would think of all the people who should realize that music isn't appealing because it's dificult to play, musicians should be at the top of that list. You could have an argument over whether Robert Fripp is better than Carlos Santana, or you could accept that they're two totally diferent gods. And like all musicians they're just selecting from possible combinations of notes which were all there already, just waiting to be played.

good call. You may like someone better, but Hendrix was THE innovator of what became the electric guitar "style" forever splitting the electric guitar from the acoustic guitar in terms of how it was played. Sure, steve Vai is probably one of the most technically proficiant guitar players out there, (besides, he could actually transcribe zappa's stuff), and he broke ground himself, but Jimi was the giant. As far as VH goes, i think eddie has to be on the major innovator list, not so much for his tapping, but for the rest of his style. Really listen to VH and any 80's metal music and tell me how they're the same.

because he's done it before...

nick..i went to see steve vai..and i gotta tell you..i was more blown away by a hendrix VIDEO than i was sitting there watching vai....now im a steve vai freak so dont get me wrong...hendrix is the reason that people like joe satriani and steve vai started to play...did you know it takes steve vai 8 weeks to reach his peak on a tour...man, jimi used to just get up and play and it always was better than the last..

if you've seen joe satch in san fransico..you'll hear that joe goes on about his gear saying, yeah, im trying to keep a simplistic setup, just like jimi, damn, ill never be as good as jimi.....the two MAJOR guitarists of all time, who will always stand the test of time, are Hendrix..and jimmy Page

but you gotta realise, feel and soul are more important than perfection and machine like sound..and stop this dislike of people because they smashed or burnt their guitars...in hendrix's scenario....he felt that to repay all his fans, he had to sacrifice something he loved, which was his guitar, i think thats a bit more generous that saying thatnkyou 500 times

I love Hendrix, but I'm pretty sure we can all agree on the fact that he is overrated. He should be respected due to his innovation on the instrument and his attention to melody/feel which is uncommon in guitarists ;) .

But I'm sick of him being called the greatest guitarist ever... he's an innovator... and good... but not the greatest.

+1 to everything you said. I do like his music but when people start saying he is the greatest guitarist of all time, it proves they don't know much.
