Hagstrom 8 string bass re-issue?

I see Hagstrom as a new 8 string bass, the HB-8, which is very similar in style to the 60s model, it is short scale, made in Korea, and has a very modern looking bridge.

Anyone out there play one, see one in person? There are no Hagstrom dealers in Albuquerque, but I am interested in checking this out!

Yeah, the idea of a short scale 8 string bass interests me, and for under $500 that's even better!

I have a 32" scale Waterstone TP 8 string bass that I love, so a short scale would be a cool addition!

I got mine this past week. I am very happy with it. The unfortunate thing was it took 14 months for the music store that I shop at to get it from the distributor. I am very impressed with the fit and finish it is very solid. The nut is graphite and the bridge is massive. The knobs are volume, a 6 way pickup selector and tone. The only minor complaints that I have are the tuning pegs are all the same size. The first photos that I saw had a smaller peg for the octave string. I also find the placement of the strap button on the horn of the bass in a weird spot. Overall great bass, great tone, great value.

Sounds interesting! Yea, my local store siad they had one on the way, I think that was almost a year ago! I will certainly check it out IF it comes int.

Well, almost a year later and I did get my cherry finish Hagstrom HB-8 string bass. It is a nice instrument, esp for the price. Got mine for $450. Sturdy build, and very unique looking.

First, it is heavy. It is short scale, with a classy looking headstock. It has a volume knob, tone knob, and a blend selector knob, that provides six varistions or combinations of the PUs. Very cool! The neck is natural finish, feels like it is satin or something, but not high gloss.

The bridge on this bass is very modern, and the tone is pretty amazing. Esp for a short scale. This bass is not for everybody, and certainly would not be a good choice for a first bass. But it really is a cool addition to a bass collection.

I have one of the Hagstrom reissued 8 strings and I love it.

Rob you pretty much nailed it in your description.

I bought mine months back. I even forgot I had ordered it until it came in! I have to say, I really liked it as soon as I played it. I then stuck it on a guitar stand and forgot about it until about a week ago, I took it and started playing it, not I grab it ever day and play it, it is so fun and easy to jam on it. And the tone is really exceptional. I am glad you are enjoying yours! What color did you get? It comes in black, and I think it used to come in white as well, I could be wrong.

I have one, in cherry. I ordered it July of '09 and finally received it March of '10. I decided to buy one because a dealer rep friend of mine let me borrow his demo to check out (it was white), and it blew me away with its fit and finish, versatility, and even the intonation was great. Plus, I was having zero success with the ever-increasing number of Dean 8 offerings that were defective in one way or another. That's a saga in itself.

The first Hag showed up in February with the neck ripped from the body. Back it went. The second one arrived with the input jack falling into the body. The cup that the input jack was supposed to screw into was slightly oversized so the jack would just disappear when I went to plug in. Since I waited so long to receive the bass, I figured the hell with it and I'd just replace the jack myself. Before i did that, I noticed that the sound was distorted. Replacing the jack didn't fix that problem. The first bass that arrived broken was still sitting around waiting for a call tag, so I swapped out the entire pick guard assembly. The pickguard screws, I'm pretty sure, were made of chrome plated sugar. I knew and was fine with the fact that it was made overseas; it was a risk I was willing to take because that demo I tried was so spot-on in every regard.

It really is a beautiful instrument. It does have a wide variety of tones, which is great. The intonation, however is horrible. It's about 4 cents off once past the 12th fret. All the setup in the world won't take care of it. Plus, for the life of me, I can't keep the thing in tune. Curiously, it always go sharp on the main strings and flat on the octave strings. When I first saw the bass, I was taken by how cool the tuning machines are. Well, I prefer function over form, so I'm replacing them all with genuine Gotoh.

As for the intonation, well...

It's not my main bass. I guess I'll just avoid chording or even fretting beyond the 12th fret.

They are starting to make their way into the used market. This one caught my eye on Boston's Craiglist (I am not the seller and have no connection to him/her). Since my guitarist is starting to use a 12-string setting on his Variax, I figure I may need something to counter. :D

Seller put a $350 firm price on it. It is one of the cherry finished ones.

I just joined the talk bass forum today. I recently got a 1968 Hagstrom 8 string bass on Hawaii's craigslist. It's red and is in pretty nice condition.

I'm looking for advice/help on a few problems that I'm having.

One of the bridge saddles has part of the side broken off...(maybe my friend who works with metal can fix it).

The other problem I'm having is with one of the tuning keys (low G) is slipping. I'm hoping to find a replacement key or try to tighten up the post/gear mechanism somehow.

If anyone can offer any suggestions...I'm all ears :):bassist:

Thank you, Tom
