Half an Ampeg SVT 810e

Wall of Ampeg (sprinkled with Peavey).

Nice! How do these compare to Ampeg's 210AV cabs?

Nice! How do these compare to Ampeg's 210AV cabs?

Frankly, there is no comparison. The cabs I built and the S210 cabs loaded with the SVT speakers could be used for pretty much any kind of gig, where the SVT-210AV's are pretty much limited to medium duty use. When I was playing in a band with 2 loud guitarists and a hard hitting drummer, the Micro VR stack was just barely keeping up. The low end response at that volume was not very good - the cabs were just not made for that kind of volume. That's when I bought the 810e and PF-800. The S210's would have easily been able to keep up with plenty of low end. I think Ampeg would have been better off using the S210's in the VR stack. A little bigger and heavier, but better suited for rock bands. The VR stack does have it's place though, and I don't regret getting it. At lower volumes it sounds great. It's not half an SVT-810e however.

I built a sealed vertical 4x10 using eminence sc10-16 drivers that I really like. I find it to have a clearer sound than my 610 loaded with the same drivers. I'm actually thinking about getting 4 heritage drivers to load in the the authentic 8x10 sound.

Do you find the vertical stack of 2x10's sound clearer than a regular 8x10?

Not in my music room. I'll have to wait until I find a new band to see how they perform in the mix, so to speak. I do notice the speakers break up into that wonderful Ampeg growl at a lower volume, which makes sense.

Just ordered 4 heritage drivers. After taxes and shipping it was $548.60. Sheesh!

Yeah, speakers are expensive. The only way I was able to do this project was because I found that SVT-810e on Craig's list a few years back for $300. If anyone wants the empty, stripped cabinet, it's sitting in my back yard. Just come and pick it up and it's yours. I should probably put up an ad in the classified.

The Heritage speakers are reputed to be noticeably better than the classic series. Good choice.

In the mean time, the roll of grille cloth arrived today.

Pretty good match I think. So I have another project for this weekend.

OK, hopefully, the last update for this build. Last night, I started making a template for the grilles, and halfway through, I realized I could probably use the template for one of the grilles, and wouldn't have to buy more wood.

This morning, I took the template out of the clamps, and routed them to size. After, I put on a coat of flat black spray paint.

Using my trusty staple gun, I put on the first grille cloth on the frame.

Then the badge.

And finished up the last grille.

I may or may not buy another badge. I may just put on the "Classic" badge at the bottom. Or just leave it as is.

And the final Ampeg wall.

That new cloth is pretty bright, but I think in a year or so, it'll settle down to the level where the SVT-210AV cabs are at.

I think I'll spend a little time rocking these :bassist:

Final update - I went in search of a metal logo badge and found one on eBay, but after I was outbid for my $25 bid plus $5 shipping, I figured I should lower my expectations and go with plastic ones. I think they look pretty close to the metal ones anyway.

$2.00 each at Invalid Link Removed, right here in town. They have a great selection of guitar and amp parts, along with a bunch of luthier tools, all at reasonable prices. $2.00 each for the badges is the lowest I've seen. I just have to find a couple of black screws, and these will be finished.

Nice work Mapleglo!

I recently built a 2x15 cab - which is a close copy to your two SVT 1x15s. I also used 13 Ply Baltic Birch (from woodworkers Supply in Tempe AZ) and I was surprised by the weight - the 4 x 8 sheet that I purchased was about 80 pounds. Aside from the cutouts, I used the entire sheet for the build - so the cab ended up being about 100 pounds (w/Eminence Beta 15A speakers). I think if I was to do it again, I would use Poplar - I think Ampeg uses this wood for their cabs now - because of the lighter weight.

I own the Ampeg P.A. head that your "S"cabs were originally designed to be used with. I got it for $58.00 and it makes a great rehearsal amp - and it saves me from having to set up my gigging P.A. for practices.

As an alternative to the price of Heritage drivers (@kringle77), I found a set of older blown SVT drivers and had them re-coned with the Heritage kits. Fortunately for me, I have a friend that does re-coning for at a lower cost. I haven't built a cab for those speakers yet, but they should sound the same.
