Half-stack for a student.

You might get a dorm room on the 5th floor. Hauling anything around that takes more that two trips, a couple of friends or a truck probably won't be practical.

Dunno about anyone else, but I don't have much of a problem carrying alot of slightly lighter 15s (Hartke etc) with 1 handle and carrying a head with the other.

What kinda stuff do you usually play? Is there anything in particular you want your amp to be good for, or do you want plenty of versatility?

I had three rigs in my short stint in dorms:
1) Ashdown combo and extension cab.
2) Peavey TMax head, 2x10 and 1x15.
3) Peavey TMax head, 4x10 and 1x14.

I was gigging heavily in college, so I needed the amp. It just set between the fridge and our beds. While huge for a dorm room amp, it worked well. It helped that I didn't have a ton of other stuff lying around. I kept my basses in cases under the bed.

Some of the portability orientated 15s are smaller then 4x10s, personally I don't see how they'd sound as good though with so little room to breathe. In general I've been pretty disappointed by the sound of most portable stuff I've heard.

Versatility. I play every genre and every style. I use my fingers, slap, and pick. I want something good and well rounded.

Ashdown are very good all rounders, not sure how expensive they are over there though.
