halftime

I wan't trying to be a smartass, Mellow. I just don't like that vocal style. I know a lot do, and if you enjoyed it, great.
I can see where it is fine to invent your own melody for a pop tune, but I think the national anthem should be held in higher regard than that. To me it is like throwing the flag on the ground and stomping on it.
I understand I'm in the minority here, but that is my honest feeling about it.
But Denver winning made up for it.

Well, just so you know, I think that musically, that anthem is just awful, and the reason singers and performers dress it up is precisely BECAUSE they have so much regard for the flag and this country. Hard to imagine, but that's my take on it. Also, Ray Charles' version of America the Beautiful is one of the greatest performances of all time. We all have different ways of showing we love this nation, but for my money, I'm just glad when someone does. I guarantee you, Lady Gaga would never throw the flag on the ground and stomp on it.

And Denver winning was more than all right with me!

+1 on Ray Charles. Talk about goosebumps.

I think it is basically implied that a few liberties are okay when one hires a pop star to sing the national anthem. Why bother otherwise? I was actually pleasantly surprised because I expected much worse. And I am not even American...

The halftime show was much worse. I prefer the approach by the Red Hot Chili Peppers: don't even pretend like it's live when it clearly isn't. Coldplay combined the worst of both worlds: the instrumentalists looked plugged in but weren't, their would-be playing was visibly off and Chris Martin sang live but couldn't get a single phrase completely in tune.

Want to say Hendrix did the only version of the song I would ever listen to other than because I had to. If I had to pick a second it would probably be Whitney though.

I don't think its unpatriotic to say the song (which long predates its use as our national anthem) is pretty awful musically. If you've had to play it more than a few times, it's much more a chore than a song. But please feel free to hate me if you disagree. One of the things the song represents is the freedom to have different tastes in music and to say so without fear. I do think those that dislike most of these singers versions would have been in the upset majority when Hendrix did it originally. Always found that a funny thought.

I wasn't in the room when she sang it and I'm not going to bother listening to it now. She's a talented singer but also a weirdo at times. I don't see anything wrong with either of those things, if the relatively conservative NFL thinks she could then that's cool with me.

Halftime though, got to say that P, through the PA then through the TV speakers, was pretty nice sounding all things considered.

To me, the most outrageous spectacle of the night was Lady Gag Me totally destroying the national anthem. Even when she wasn't warbling through the scale trying to impress us with her vocal gymnastics, she was making up her own melody. Maybe that's okay for some mindless pop tunes, but I don't like it at all for the national anthem.

I'm with you on this! I don't understand how anybody can think it's alright to change the melody of the national song of our country! To me it needs to be sung exactly as it was written note for note. I'm a NASCAR fan and some of the anthems before the Xfinity and Sprint Cups races are absolutely horrendous! The only people that sing it as it's suppose to be is when they have a singer from the Military. They understand what it's all about!

We are not the only ones annoyed by this: Fine proposed for botching US national anthem

Here's a great comparison at just how much singers are mangling it: Invalid Link Removed

Legislation may be a bit over the top. But, I like the idea.
