According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 7.2% of the adult population met the DSM-5 criteria for diagnosis of an Alcohol Use Disorder in 2012. Now, best estimate for world population over the age of 14 is 6.3B (84.1%of current population). So, if you extrapolate the US abuse ratio to the world, you'd only end up with about 441M....less than half of a single billion. No concise world data seems to exist.
But I digress...
I enjoyed a lovely pour of Blantons last night over a globe of ice. Delicious.

It's been one of my favs for years. Very consistent and smooth.
I didn't drink any alcohol for over 20 years after a couple of bad episodes. A few years back, I started to allow myself red wine again. The usual wine of choice is Pinot Noir. There are many good brands out there, but my current favorite is a mid-price that can be found just about anywhere:
always mexican beers for me: any will do: corona, modelo, tecate, dos equis, pacifico, yada yada.

Except it does. When they kill us in cars, act stupid in bars, and all the other ways they pollute our world. I'm not out to make drinking illegal, or control someone's behavior, but I take exception to the concept that alcohol doesn't have a negative effect in my life. It has had a ton of negative effect, and I can't think of anything positive to say about it. This is a thread about celebrating alcohol. In order for it to have balance, I have to point out that it's not without it's problems, and those problems are pretty significant.
I don't doubt that some of the posters to this thread have a drinking habit that is controlled, and doesn't cause them problems. I do doubt that it's a very large percentage of them, however.
Because I'm sad for all the friends and loved ones who have died from alcoholism, and many others are, too.
Unfortunately, even sober people can "act stupid" and polite our world as well.
No grandstanding needed here. Just people talking about booze. Happy, mostly sober people....

My younger brother was killed in 1989 by a drunk driver. I don't feel like I'm the proper person to regulate a thread about alcohol.
Just me, of course.

You don't have to meet the DSM-5 criteria to have or be involved in an alcohol related accident. All you have to be is around a careless drunk; or more precisely around a careless person that is alcohol impaired.
Well, yes. My comment, however, was in reply to a specific comment made by our mellow-ing friend.
