Sorry if I posted this in the wrong section.. Move it if necessary.
Right now I have a really ****** rockcase for my Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass and its beginning to fall apart.

Been looking at the SKB-44 Bass Case, seems to be a good sturdy case for a decent amount of money. This one that is: Invalid Link Removed


What hardcases would you recommend?

Must haves: Storage compartments similar to the ones on the SKB-case. It must be rectangular. It must be plastic as this seems to offer the best protection without beeing to heavy. And I want it to be molded for J/P-bass style bodies.

I've been completely satisfied with my SKB plastic cases. I don't tour with them, but they do get plenty of travel time in cars and trucks. Noticeably lighter than a plywood/tolex case, and they hold up cosmetically far better than a tolex covered case ever will

One of 'em is now something like 20 years old and with reasonable care (but not babied, by any means) has stood up remarkably well. Plenty of minor scuffs and scratches, but all the hardware is still 100% functional. The other is a more recent (Freedom®) model that I bought used right here on TB. Pretty much identical hinges, latches, and aluminum edge extrusions. Minor differences in the interior, but the newer one also fits my P-Basses perfectly. As far as I can tell it should prove to be just as durable as the older one

FWIW neither of these cases have the newfangled TSA latches - something I specifically avoided, more for aesthetic reasons than anything else. If I ever get in a position where I would need to travel with a bass as airline baggage, I would undoubtedly get an Anvil-style road case....

I'll add another vote for SKB. I have transported my StingRay in a very used, downright ugly SKB Freedom case for more than 10 years. There are no issues with the hardware or the integrity, just lots of scrapes and scuffs. My P bass came with the new Fender/SKB case four and a half years ago. Same deal - lots of scrapes and scuffs but still 100% functional. I've gotta admit those TSA latches are pretty ugly, but they haven't given me any trouble. And only one of the four latches actually has the TSA lock - the other three are just latches.

I've had two SKB cases - one that came with my Ray (rectangular) and a shaped one that I bought for one of my Jazz basses. They're pretty good, but for sheer strength and rigidity without being any heavier, my Hiscox cases (as used by Status) beat them by a mile. Honestly, there is NO comparison at all in terms of function and quality. But I don't know whether Hiscox do a rectangular case. Both of mine are shaped.

Hiscox cases didnt really appeal to me. Thanks for the tip anyway.

Nice to hear so much feedback about SKB-cases, I think I'll be getting one of those. Seems like they have everything I want.

The fact that it has wheels is really cool. It would even be possible to tow it behind my bicycle at low speeds.

Not sure about price! The OP is in Europe and SKB being American gear makes it pricey over here. I've often noticed that American stuff which is a good deal in the States seems less of a deal when exported. That's totally to be expected, of course. Shipping costs money, after all.

Works the other way, too. Some British gear seems pretty dear in the US.

I have that exact case and It is very nice and everything with its amazing lifetime warranty and all, But... it may of just been my experience, I had to send my case back to the factory 2 times because every time it got to me the case was either cracked or did not align correctly, as it stands the 3rd case i have gotten is cracked along the metal case rib thing but it does not effect the use of the case so until the entire case explodes I am going to keep it.

I paid about $160 for mine including tax. It is worth the money, get one....but some bases do not fit in it snug enough so do some research first, my G&L-L2500 seems to fit fairly well enough if that's any help to you. Sorry for the long post, good luck. :hiding:
