Harley Benton RB414CS

That's exactly why I think Brand Name (tm) superiority complexes are ridiculous. Like, we get it, you overpaid for a Made in America (tm) bass and you want to flex on the poors without overtly admitting to it so you have to instead justify the massive amounts of money you've spent by saying something like "well your overseas-manufactured instrument sounds NOWHERE NEAR as good as this American Made one that I paid 10x as much for, even though it was made in the same factory and by the same people that put out a lot of other products that are resold by popular and reputable brands worldwide."

I'm sure a $2000 ric sounds better than a Harley Benton RB414. I'm also sure that it doesn't sound $1800 better. And like, hey, if you've got that kinda cash to blow then more power to you. Just don't pretend like it's getting you something THAT much better
I'm really not sure what your point is other than to complain about expensive basses. My point was simply to review and highlight a major design flaw in the Harley Benton RB 414 CS. The design flaw is serious enough that I'm warning people away from this particular model. Any and every brand, regardless of where it's made is going to have bad ones go out the door and be sold. I had a brand new USA Fender once that with a frozen truss rod, to the point that it snapped when the tech tried to adjust it at the store. Stuff happens.
I am NOT telling people Harley Benton, or any other brand is junk The fact that I tell you I own 5 other HB's should in and of itself tell you that I've been very happy with the quality and performance of the instruments.

Oh my bad, I was quoting you because I agree with you. Its really Rich that my comments were meant for. I'm on your side here brah

As of July or August, Thoman was out of stock of the 414cs. Mine is on order and will be here in a month or so. I gather it takes a year to get a Hofner these days. For a $200 dollar bass, I'm sure I'll spend another couple of hours setting it up. This seams to be about average. No problem.
I've got a Rogue VB100 violin bass. I studied it and the Hofner Ignition 500/1, and having played and inspected both extensively, I feel that the Rogue is a better instrument.

So I've been back and forth and back and forth with the "experts" at Thomann about the problems with this particular RB 414 CS. First a disclaimer. I have not at any time asked for or hinted that I want either a replacement or a refund.
Thomann asked for and I provided both video and still photographs of the screwed up 3-way switch and the bridge pickup at it's max height still 33/64 from the bottom of the E string.
FWIW I was able to sus out the neck pickup height problem on my own (bits of plastic wedging and keeping it from moving) and get it to the recommended 5/32.
After viewing the video I sent them they agreed to send me a new 3-way switch. Great said I.
That only leaves one item left. The bridge pickup. After going round and round the expert answer is put a 1/4 in. block of paper under the pickup. No kidding. Just so you think I'm not making this up I'm doing a copy & paste of our last exchange:
"> I'm just following up on my concerns regarding the bridge pickup problem I have with this Harley Benton RB 414 CS. As noted previously and photos sent in, the closest I can get the bridge pickup to the bottom of the thickest (E) string is 33/64 of an inch. Most places, including your own recommendations is that it should be about 5/32 of an inch. The bridge is already within 1/64 from it's lowest possible setting, On the deck is the expression and the output from the pickup at 33/64 is negligible.
> I've not heard from your experts as of yet. Hence the follow up.".
Now the Thomann "Expert" response:

Hello,

Thank you for your email

Our experts sent us some information on this pickup height adjustment.

There are 2 ways to try and adjust the pickup heights of this bass guitar.

The first one would be to match the output level of both pickups by adjusting their heights.

Sometimes the problem is that the screws are overturning and so you can´t get the bridge pickup high enough.
The experts' recommendation is to set the level of both pickups based on their output level and that means to move the neck pickup downwards a bit.

However. the pickup height is also limited by the cover and its construction. For instance, some users remove the cover and the rubber spacers of this pickup:

We can see that you removed the cover already though.

Another solution would be to cut out and place a paper/carton gasket underneath the metallic pickup frame.

Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at any time.

Kind regards .".
So there was no statement of anything like, Gee I'm sorry that never should have been shipped in that condition. So I'm left to think that ALL the RB 414 CS guitars are similarly fouled up in the bridge pickup.
It is for that reason that I cannot recommend the Harley Benton RB 414CS to anyone.
Why should anyone pay attention to me? Fair enough. My answer, I own 5 other Harley Benton bass guitars, along with Fenders (USAx2 & MIM) Ibanez Epiphones , Schecters and a Music Man. I've never had any other issue that a basic set up didn't cure on the Harley Bentons. This model is a GOOCH though. Don't spend your money on it Unless you have too much of it and want a reasonably expensive wall decoration.
With respect,I bought one of these and I'm very pleased .It looks good, plays nice and sounds great.I own currently 20 basses, some are high end,and this bass is very cool.Maybe I lucked out but I got more than my money's worth.IMO
I mean it cost 180 bucks.

I recently saw a "Youtuber", who did a recent (Nov./Dec. 2020) review of the RB414. I saw that it now has metal trim rings around the pickups. My main issue with this bass was the problem in raising the pickup height with the cheap plastic trim ring screw holes stripping out.
When I asked him if they were stock, the reviewer said they were. So it seems that Thomann does listen to and make improvements when need be. Just one more reason that I will continue to buy from Thomann.

Where is that review? I'd like to see it.

New bass day yesterday 12/29/20. Check intonation, perfect. Tuned it up and played. Removed the bridge pickup and adjusted the pu. As soon as I removed the strings, 3 of the bridge pieces fell to the floor. Can you imagine breaking a string at a gig and loosing a part of the bridge. You're done. This bass is beautiful, has a great neck, frets are good. I raised the bridge pu and have pretty equal vol between the pus.
This bass is incredible, but the bridge is garbage. The pics are as delivered, the original bridge with bridge pieces loose and with a new bridge.

I'm sorry Fellas I just failed miserably trying to photograph the bridge. Flash is causing havoc with the chrome.

There's 2 screws E side and 2 screws G side of the plate the saddles rest on then between A / D there is another screw,
this lifts the middle of the plate to create an approximate radius.

Best way I can describe it :) Haven't found any need to alter it though.
I found problems with the bridge immediately. When changing strings, the bridge pieces fall out before you realize it. That can be lived with, till you are playing a gig and break a string and the piece falls out on the stage and under the drummers kit or into the audience. These should be shipped with extra bridge pieces for this. Also, the way you have to adjust the saddles with set screws is clumsey at best. Without the set screws, they would fall out just like the rollers that the strings ride on.
I will add though, this is the first bass I've ever owned that I go out and play before I even eat breakfast. The bass is fabulous!

I found myself crawling around the floor with a flashlight looking under the couch for one the other day.I heard something hit the floor when I was loosening the strings and didn't know what it was until I noticed it was missing.Lucky to find it or I'd have been SOL.You're right extras should be included. So a word of caution is in order. It is a great bass as you noted.I'm going full in with new pups, Norstrand in the neck and Sentell for the bridge.I'm waiting for a Tone Monster preamp that's due any day.Heres thinking it'll make a great bass even better

Thank you! A few people have mentioned the bridge not being great. To me, not loosing parts is more important than looking a little like that other brand. I changed the bridge immediatly, and got string through the body to boot!

How did you accomplish string through body? Drilling the body takes care to line the holes up and not crack wood and paint, unless I'm missing something.I don't think I've ever seen string through on a semi hollow.

I haven't had a problem with the bridge other than the string barrels. In fact most reviews comment that this bridge is better than ones on authentics. If I have problems I have a Hipshot I can use.I really like this bass, I own 20 basses of various brands,a couple of high end but mostly good "players"basses from G&L to Spector and this is the best value on a bass I've come across. It really checks all the boxes for me.

This is the bridge I used. After I located it and secured it properly, I drilled down thru the holes behind the bridge pieces. You can see where the strings go down in the pic. I drilled the size of the holes, which is smaller than the ferrels. Then I drilled from the back the size of the ferrels and pressed them into place.
This is a great bass and deserves to have a bridge that you can play without loosing parts. If you've ever broken a string on stage, you can absolutly understand what I'm saying. Good luck.

Has anybody actually tried the Hipshot replacement bridge for a Ric. on this model of HB? Fitment issues, string spacing, etc..
Yes I know it's near or more than the cost of the bass but I'm thinking it may be well worth the investment.
*Please don't suggest that I look @ I own a HB club unless you care to share a link. Thank you*
