i just picked up the hartke 5000, 2x250 watts, with a 210 cab. the amp is awesome, but i feel the cab isn't keepin up. i'm thinkin about another 210, or should i go with a 115?

What 2x10 cab are you using?
Anyways... you are only getting 170 watts. The power amps on the 5000 are not bridged, and each power amp's rating is at 4 ohms. At 8 ohms, each power amp puts out only 170 watts, which means that you are getting exactly that. If volume is what you mean by "not being able to keep up," it may have something to do with that.

yeah i know what you mean about the wattage. i'm usin' the xL cabinet. i'm not really used to this ohmage crap, cause i've played combos. i was just wondering if another 210 would be suitable
ohmage meaning impedance! impedance - I aint no tech...by a LOOOOng shot- is amount of ohms(resistance) if yr cab is 8 ohms & this -as stated above-gives U 175w each channel, a 4 ohm load(or 2x8 ohm cabs) will give U 250w outta the channel, or U can run each 8 ohm cab outta each channel & get 175w to EACH cab = 350w total! Read your manual re the amp & it should tell U how to get max. power. But another cab-be it a 1 x 15 or another 2x10 WILL give U more volume!!!
IMHO a 15" matches a 2 x 10 cab well. Gives a lot more BASS feel & 'roundness' thats what I'd go 4 If I were you. Then U can use either cab.
Again-read your manual-or download one if U don't have one- IT will give U info on what best cabs(or impedance of cabs) you are best to get. Then ask more questions here if needed. Good Luck.

The 210xl isn't a great cab on its own, it's better paired with a cab that has more low end. And the 5000 head is designed to be used with at least two cabs. You'd find a 115xl cab would work GREAT with the amp and cab you have. Another option would be to add a 2.5xl which is bigger, ported and has MUCH more bottom end than the 210xl.
I'd take your bass, amp and 210xl along to a dealer. Plug the 210xl into the HF output and then try adding a 115xl using the LF outputs. Try this setup bi-amped (play with the balance and the crossover frequency) and full range. Bi-amp is my preference as it's nice to filter out the lowest of the lows to the 210xl, which doesn't handle these too well. Then repeat with a 2.5xl instead of the 115xl.
If you want to get ridiculously loud, use the 115xl, 2.5xl and 210xl altogether! Works like a dream, but a pig to carry.

I've had one for about 5 years now. I like it--i mainly bi-amp w/ mine. It has a good manual available online that discusses it's features and controls quite well. I just recently learned that you can use the 250+250 without biamping! (manual was somewhat unclear on that point!) a bit heavy w/ two power amps in it. Only gripe I've heard about them as the erlier post mentions, is that you cannot bridge the two amp outputs to give you 500 watts into one cab.
I liked the one I once owned so much that I am getting one from a friend. The preamp section does the job for me... as I like a simple rig and not a huge rack of signal processors to achieve the same sound from a different head. Hartke was able to get the sound that me and my bandmates like (I play classic-inspired metal).
Remember when you run only one cab with this amp, you should swing the Balance control all the way into the channel that's powering the cab.
