Hartke HD112 HyDrive

Sadly I had to pack up my new HD112 for return. Couldn't get usable volume from it without a buzzing/rattling sound. Sad because it had a unique tone, which was likable, but when turned up to a decent volume it made noise. I don't abuse cabs either, I keep the bass knob around 1:00 or just past half. Hopefully it's just a defect because they're cool cabs.

I had to do some tightening of screws on mine when I first got it.

I had the same type of issue with the hx112 when I tried it out in the store. I even had them bring out a brand new one in a sealed box and it had the same issue. I was too impatient to wait for the HD series to come out so I went a different direction; and I’m glad I did! I’m a Schroeder 12pl guy now!

To wake up this zombie thread, I had 2 of the HX112 and took them back for 2 of the HD112. The HD just sounded better to me. More full and substantial. - It has switching from 8 to 4 ohm plus adjustable tweeter. Yes, they are about 12 lb (?) heavier. I just like them better. Both, however seem very well built and substantial. And I do agree that a single HD112 is a bit weak for anything more than the smallest venue. It only handles 300 watts. So, , , it is only so much. But a pair of them really does seem to be more than twice as loud.
Great speaker cabs really. . !

Sorry to bump an old thread but I was curious if anyone else has any experience with these. I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on an HD112 but am also considering a used HX112. Any added input is appreciated. I'll be powering it with a Mesa D800.

I tried the HX before the HD was available and there was a really bad rattle in the cab. I had SA open a brand new box and the same thing happened. The HD112 looks great and I would have tried it if I didntt decide on custom Schroeders instead.

I decided to pull the trigger on a new HD112. I'm a pretty frugal guy and was wanting to get something used but there was less than $100 difference between buying a new HD112 with free shipping (Shout out to sweetwater) and buying a used HX112 from GC's used site and paying for shipping.

I watched one or two youtube videos comparing the HD vs the HX. It seemed like the HX was inherently more scooped and the HD had more low mids. Since I'm more of a rock player, the added mids are a good thing. I should have it in a week or so. Once I've gotten acquainted with it, I'll report back.

What do you think about the cab overall?

I like the sound of the cab, not harsh but warm, enough low end.
Yesterday I used all day it for practice with an orchestra (strings, brass, upright bass) and I could hear myself very well (cab at 4 Ohm, tweeter full on). I was seated and the cab was a few meters away on the ground.

Because of its size and weight it is very practicle.
I put the cab on a handtruck, on top of the cab a shopping bag with the amp, guitar stand, music stand 220V extension cord, etc. With the bass in a gigbag over my shoulder, I can go in 1 walk from the parkinglot to the practice room.

I think playing in a (rock)band with 2 guitarists and drummer, you need 2 HD112's, but I haven't tested it.

I saw a classic rock/R&B band over the weekend where the bass player was fully miniaturized with an HX112, a Birdsong bass, and (I think) an Aguilar TH amp. This was the HX not the HD, but it sounded great -- good un-flabby lows, warm, balanced mids, and plenty of definition but nothing plinky or papery about the highs. I was impressed. Of course it was a small room and they weren't pulling out all the stops, but it was a rock band not a folk duo, and the single Hartke didn't seem to have any trouble pulling its weight.

I've had the HD112 for a few weeks now so I figured I'd report back. Let me preface this by saying I don't have a ton of experience with a lot of bass amps. However, I'm very impressed by the cab especially for what it costs. I would describe the cab as warm and has a low mid focus. Not scooped to my ears. It has more than enough low end considering it's a single 12. I was honestly wanting to go with a GK neo 112 but I was trying to stay cheap. I was looking for a used GK 112 but nothing was available at the time so I pulled the trigger on the HD112. It seems to be very well constructed. Doesn't sound boxy to my ears which is something I was concerned about. I'm very impressed with it. It is exactly what I was hoping it would be and at a very reasonable price. I will be picking up a second one in the near future so I can start gigging again. Overall, it was a very solid purchase and I definitely recommend it. The D800 running through the HD112 sounds SO GOOD!

I own an Avatar SB112 for about 10yrs now as I also wanted to go smaller. They sound great and handle mist venues with PA.

Now that Avatars are going up in price, I wanted another 112, but wanted to A/B a Hartke HD112.
Well it may not look pretty, but I run both the Avatar and Hartke together to get the full 4ohms and it sounds good to my ears.

The HD112 sounds even and can get crisp when needed. The Avatar has a great low end response and booms!
