Has anyone drank absinthe?

Actually sounds like a kickass drink too.

All you do is pour it in a tall glass over ice. You can't even taste the alchohol, a very dangerous concoction. When I picked up my grapefruit wine, I also picked up a GALLON of orane wine for myself. He's making some orange now, with pinapple blended in. That should be incredible. The damn crazy redneck Florida cracker is getting BOOOTIQUE :rollno: I had a few samples of some other stuff he had and really shouldn't have driven home :ninja:

I have a friend who pimps the stuff so I've had a chance to try many brands. It really does vary a lot, some suck and some are yummy. I like the Suisse styles without the sugar but in America more seem to like it with sugar.

Any ways this is his site which has a bunch of info & videos on absinthe...
http://absintheology.com
the videos are pretty good at explaining the differences between the main types, what's in it and how it's distilled.

He's one of the people that thinks thujone can be felt, I think he's just normally nuts and that's what he's feeling :) I like the taste but the majority of people I let try it hate it.

Bohemian absinthe doesn't louche...

DON'T LIGHT YOUR ABSINTHE ON FIRE!!! It's not Sambucca.

If you want a louching drink after drinking absinthe but don't want to spend megabucks on booze, just get a bottle of Pernod.

I like absinthe but would rather have a few bottles or beer, wine, and a bottle of bourbon to go with a nice cigar.

Ideally, get a bottle and have a couple of drinks after you've already been into a few.

If you want a great headstart make some Dognoses

Pour a shot of gin into a lager, garnish with lemon/lime to taste (optional)

I like Tanquerray, but Beefeater tastes great in Dognoses. When it comes down to it, it's a great drink to try new gins out on. Always a great excuse to try the new sale brands: the Dognose.

All it provides is a unique form of intoxication. Don't expect anything crazy to happen. One thing I can say is that absinthe brings back my ordinarily supressesd dreams in a big way. I don't remember having such senseless vivid dreams in at least 10 years.

From the reports I have read it seems that the artists that were drinking it in the 1800's were drinking A LOT of it. Also some of the "convultions" and hallucinations were probably from the DTs of alchohol withdrawl.

From what I hear the anti absinthe propoganda and the hallucination stories were created by the cognac industry to help their business in the same way Randolph Hearst created propaganda that marijuana made black men rape white woman to create fear that stopped hemp competing with his lumber holdings for newspaper use.

Studies on old pre ban bottles have shown the thujone levels were not higher in the past than they are today. But science doesn't stop those who want to believe they're tripping.

I just grabbed a bottle of absinthe this morning. My first taste ever. It's certainly different. Strong anise flavors, and other various herbs. I like it! I know nothing about it, so I relied on the Wormwood Society website to steer me in a good direction. Anyone have any opinions on this particular stuff? What are your thoughts?

I can't comment on that brand, but I bought a bottle of Jade Nouvelle-Orleans absinthe a couple of years back, and I still have over 1/2 the bottle. It's a special occasion spirit. Really good stuff, but a bit pricey. I also bought a set of brouille glasses to go with it. It's a 2-piece glass, and the top piece holds ice and has a dripper hole in the bottom. You put roughly 1.5oz. of absinthe in the main glass, then place the brouiller on top. Fill the brouiller with cubed or crushed ice, then pour ice water into it. It will create a nice louche and also chill the drink nicely. I also don't add any sugar to my absinthe. The Wormwood Society page has a lot of good reviews and info, and is a good place to research absinthe.

I've had it in several forms, including the authentic French wormwood variety. It's basically glorified anisette/chartreuse. There is absolutely nothing magical about it and no, it won't make you hallucinate. It will make you vomit if you drink enough of it though, just like any other booze. If you don't like the flavor of anise/licorice, you won't like absinthe.

I don't care for the traditional absinthe and water combination. When you add water, you get something that tastes like some kind of weak herbal tea. I drink it straight, in tiny sips. Half of the appeal for me, is the taste and mouthfeel of such a highly alcoholic liquid. It's a unique experience that nothing else compares to.

Another thing that I like to do with absinthe is to make a martini with vanilla vodka, and a bit of dry vermouth. I love the vanilla-licorice vibe. It's a very strong drink, however, so I rarely make it.
