Has anyone drank absinthe?

The power of suggestion is a lot stronger than you'd imagine.

For example, there were experiments done in which half of the sample was given gin & tonic, and the other half was just given tonic. They all started to act drunk, slurring their words, decreased motor functions, loosened inhibitions. Some of the sober ones were acting more drunk than the drunk ones who were drunk 'cause they drank the alcohol that made 'em drunkt.

They really thought they were drunk, though. They even reported feeling all of the symptoms of intoxication.

Yeah, ever had a big night planned, and start feeling a little loopy before anything's been consumed? Or been around people in an altered state and feel a little out of it yourself (the whole contact high thing)... Expectations are huge in that kind of thing.

The stuff that the liquor stores in the US sells is CRAP. It tastes like bad anisette. Some boutique liquor stores are selling the new american made stuff. There are laws against high thujone percentages but it's not a controlled substance. IMHO, the small companies that are making it domestically are bending the laws just a little. I don't feel clear headed, just happy and smiley :) The best thing is no matter how much I drink, I feel fine the next day.

Thats pretty much how I thought it was, but I've never actually tried anything better... I might have to look into some of the smaller US brands. Any favorites?

So it sounds kind of like mushrooms to me, then.

That's what I always said after drinking the stuff... but the mellower end of the night after a few beers stage, not the rediculous parts.

"Knifemaker took 'shrooms?

I thought he was a republican gun nut"

Doesn't mean anything. There's no negative side-effects other than possible nausea or a bad trip. No one even knows how it works, just that it seems to emulate seratonin. It's used to treat cluster headaches and OCD.

In fact there is a large college study on hallucinogenics going on right now in New Mexico. Some of the Chemistry prof's at LSU were enlisted as co-researchers. They're actually administering this stuff to college kids...

I had a neighbor who used to tell us about getting paid $100 a day to sit down and get tested (like the "what does this look like" test... can't remember the name) while on acid and weed for the original studies on those substances.

Oh, and that knifemaker thing was a joke.

There's a place in Barcelona where you can get something that's (supposed to be) very close to 'real' absinthe. They serve it with a sugarcube and a squirt-bottle with water in it. The actual absinthe looks like Pastis or Ricard (Anisette) and smells that way too. You have to dip the sugarcube in the alcohol, then light it and leave it to burn on a spoon (that you hold above the glass). You put out the burning sugarcube by squirting some water on it. Both water and sugar end up in your absinthe.
The result is a nice, softer version which drinks much like a anisette.
The whole ritual also adds a nice touch of course.
Other than that, i don't believe it's stronger than some other things out there. It's effects are no different than any other alcoholic substance of that strength (no hullucinogenic effect).

I've had it a few times. I don't really like the taste. I am defintely in the "effects are exhagerated / power of suggestion" camp. Nothing I have read about it would indicate that even if high doses, there would be any hallucinogenic / different effect from alchohol. Its the Tara Labs Power Cable of alcoholic drinks! :D

The US version of absinthe is "thujone free" which means <10ppm beacuse that is the law.

Thujone and alcohol are oposites....:hyper: one is an agonist and the other an antagonist. It works on GABA to create a form of non-linear thought pattern and increased sensitivity to light sound and musique.

Another thing....boring rant continues...if you don't prepare it properly then you will not experience any effect. Trickle iced water at a ratio of 1:4 to release the herbal oils held in suspension in the alcohol ---it cretaes a clouding called a louche (anethole from anise). Drinking it as a shot is not such a good idea.

The real deal is only in Europe --- although Kubler and Trillium are nice beverages. Lucis is not. Here's what I drink:

Roquette 1797 from Mr Oxy (absintheclassics)
Century Absinthe (100mg thujone)
Swiss La Bleue (clear absinthe)

Real absinthe is expensive as they use fresh herbs and an artisanal still, but it is a concentrate and a little goes a long way. Cheap absinthe will make you very drunk and give you the hangover from hell...it is made using an essence in big metal tanks. Do not drink it unless you just like getting totally wasted. The absinthe effect is subtle and should not be confused with THC, 'shrooms or anything like that.

Rant ends....
