Absinthe is not a drug, but it has an effect
OTOH, I do find it fairly interesting that those who haven't had the absithne market closed to them (such as myself) and have tried the stuff a number of times have noticed no effects other than drunkeness from a high alcohol beverage. Like whisky straight from the cask. Like Fox Mulder, "I want to believe".![]()
Absinthe is not a drug, but it has an effect, and the most rational explanation is from Berkeley:
That's tea!I thought you were meant to prepare it with hot water and sugar?
i actually like black licorice a lot but this stuff i could only drink a few shots of it before it was just too licorcey for me. i wouldn't sit around drinking that all night, too nasty.
You're not supposed to drink shots of absinthe. That's like drinking shots of fine wine - it's just not the "correct" way to do it.

This sort of thing, among other readings on the subject, is what has convinced me that it is nothing more than suggestive power that creates the so called "effect" of absinthe. Adding water should make no difference, there is plenty of it in your mouth, stomach and digestive system.
I'm not understanding the licorice connection. The Absinthe I have tastes more like fennel, not even like annisette. Without the sugar it's bitter. With good absinthe you will feel the "sensation" much quicker than an alchohol buzz. That's why I said I never really drink enough to get DRUNK from it. I don't know what some of you guys are drinking![]()
Some of the weaker Absinthes have aniseed in them, IIRC.
As far as I know, the inclusion or exclusion of it isn't a marker for the quality or strength of the absinthe, I've had some great absinthes with liquorice undertones, had some crap ones with no aniseed taste at all.Are Wormwood, Fennel and Aniseed not the 3 neccessary ingredients in Absinthe? I thought only the Czech-style absinthe didn't have AniseedAs far as I know, the inclusion or exclusion of it isn't a marker for the quality or strength of the absinthe, I've had some great absinthes with liquorice undertones, had some crap ones with no aniseed taste at all.
I have never tried the stuff, but it looks like Zombie pi$$ ???

You guys need to try the orange and grapefruit wine they make around here. It's not actually wine, it's distilled citrus spirits that they blend back with orange or grapefruit juice. It packs a strange BUZZ also but nothing like Absinthe. I'm taking a BIG bottle to a wedding next weekend. Should be fun![]()
