Has anyone drank absinthe?

OTOH, I do find it fairly interesting that those who haven't had the absithne market closed to them (such as myself) and have tried the stuff a number of times have noticed no effects other than drunkeness from a high alcohol beverage. Like whisky straight from the cask. Like Fox Mulder, "I want to believe". ;)

Absinthe is not a drug, but it has an effect, and the most rational explanation is from Berkeley:

I agree with you but in saying that there's a rational explanation from Berkeley is an oxymoron :D

A good friend of mine and my brother in law will drink my liquor stock dry. If it has an alchohol proof, they'll suck it up. After drinking some of my better Absinthe, NEITHER one will touch the stuff anymore. It's not like any regular booze and it's not for everyone.

i actually like black licorice a lot but this stuff i could only drink a few shots of it before it was just too licorcey for me. i wouldn't sit around drinking that all night, too nasty.

You're not supposed to drink shots of absinthe. That's like drinking shots of fine wine - it's just not the "correct" way to do it.

Not closed to me, I've never had a problem getting it. :D

Different types of drinks cause different types of drunks. Any of your neighborhood bartenders can attest to that. I'm used to drinking higher proof, higher quality liquor (I'm also a scotch fiend). Absinthe has its own quality of intoxication, as does good scotch.

This sort of thing, among other readings on the subject, is what has convinced me that it is nothing more than suggestive power that creates the so called "effect" of absinthe. Adding water should make no difference, there is plenty of it in your mouth, stomach and digestive system.

Chemically adding water makes no difference, ice cold water is drizzled over the sugar cube to dilute the drink and release the flavor of the anise. Otherwise the complex flavor would just be overbearing licorice flavor and you wouldnt taste all the ingredients. There is 4%thurjold (sp) in absinthe, there is 50% in sage oil which has never been illegal and is used in all types of home remedies. There are tons of legal ways to catch a buzz....i think salvia would be the most potent, but it only lasts a short while, and doesnt lend itself to social use so there is no real rush to make it illegal. I spend a good amount of time in bars, many people say jaeger give them a different kinda buzz, there is lower then normal % of alchohol in jaeger and no special ingredient in it, but many people say its the anti absinthe....you defenitely do NOT get a clear headed drunk from it. Personally im addicted to Washington Apples now:) best drink ever..2 shots cranberry, 1.5 shots crown, 1 shot apple pucker shaken with ice then drained into a shooter glass.

People who are saying "drunk is drunk" and that theres no difference in how drunk you will be if you consume the same overall volume of alcohol are ignoring the fact that each drink has quite a few other chemicals in it, many of which create different effects. The stereotypes of violent whiskey drinkers and depressed gin drinkers aren't TOTALLY down to the placebo effect. Different drinks do provide different effects.

My experiences with Absinthe are in the same league as my experiences with Poitín, hazy at best (down to repeated over indulgence on my part) but still quite enjoyable and I didn't have a b*tch of a hangover :) Still didn't get any hallucinations, and I've tried a lot of good, expensive absinthe, through to cheap dirt.

I'm not understanding the licorice connection. The Absinthe I have tastes more like fennel, not even like annisette. Without the sugar it's bitter. With good absinthe you will feel the "sensation" much quicker than an alchohol buzz. That's why I said I never really drink enough to get DRUNK from it. I don't know what some of you guys are drinking

Some of the weaker Absinthes have aniseed in them, IIRC.

Are Wormwood, Fennel and Aniseed not the 3 neccessary ingredients in Absinthe? I thought only the Czech-style absinthe didn't have Aniseed :hmm: As far as I know, the inclusion or exclusion of it isn't a marker for the quality or strength of the absinthe, I've had some great absinthes with liquorice undertones, had some crap ones with no aniseed taste at all.

I'm not 100% but I don't think that Aniseed is a vital part, now is been a long time since I read the bottles etc. but as far as I remember, the stronger ones I've tried did not have Aniseed, where as the cheaper one's did, of course I've not tried every kind, so there could be nice ones with it, and crap one's without.

I have never tried the stuff, but it looks like Zombie pi$$ ???

I've never seen Zombie pi$$. I thought once you were undead your organs shut down?? :eyebrow:

You guys need to try the orange and grapefruit wine they make around here. It's not actually wine, it's distilled citrus spirits that they blend back with orange or grapefruit juice. It packs a strange BUZZ also but nothing like Absinthe. I'm taking a BIG bottle to a wedding next weekend. Should be fun :ninja:

Actually sounds like a kickass drink too.
