it's got so that there are so many after market pickup makers out there, most of whom are good, that it's tough to decide. But asking for an opinion about the sound of one over another is absolutely pointless. You get nothing but personal opinion and often from people who have never even tried that pickup. All I can tell from the ad is-they look pretty, they're very expensive and the person who wrote the copy has terrible spelling and grammar. At first I thought-made in Asia and poorly translated. Then I see that's not the case, so I guess he's just a product of today's school system.
I have Reed James pickups on my Pavel JazzPro Deluxe. Pavel built me a guitar that feels, well, like it was made for me. The thing practically plays itself! But unfortunately I assumed that meant I would never have the vintage P-bass sound I always wanted.
But Pavel knew what I was looking for, and together he and I spoke with Jim Reed. He made me custom pups that give me an incredible tone that sings jazz but still growls like a traditional P-bass.
I can definitely recommend Reed James pickups.

The thing is, every pickup you mentioned are mass produced.I just wanted to point out here with so much flag waving and all...
There are a lot of hand made pickups done right here in the USA. Even Duncan, EMG and DiMarzio, which are factories, are basically hand made. There is really no way to make pickups totally on machines. Well it could be done, but isn't. Mass produced just means you have more people working for you winding them! And those people have to know how to wind a pickup.
So if not being mass produced and made in the US is important, you have a lot to choose from, such as myself, Bill Lawrence, Lollar, Fralin, Bartolini, Nordstand, etc.
The thing is, every pickup you mentioned are mass produced.
Jim builds these, one set at a time. Give him a try. I don't think you will be disappointed....

Hey Bass Players, I'm new to this forum, and its great to see a Bass Players place to go for information. So the question is has anyone tried Reed James Bass Pickups!
I have a Fender P/J Deluxe Bass that I have used for a while, playing mostly Blues. I play through a Carvin RL-1000 and varies cabinets. I have my P/J and a few 5 string Bass's as well. I really like my P/J Fender the best of all, but it just didn't have a good mid range up the neck. Its like someone turned off the volume while I was working the Mid section of the neck. This is a passive Bass, and I wanted a good warm tone, with punch and a Phat bottom as well. It just didn't have it, so a friend told me about Reed James Pickups. I called Jim and we talked about the important things I expected from my Bass and the sound I was looking for. Jim said he could make a set of Bass pickups that would foot the bill, so I ordered a set. The Pickups came to me via mail, and I got right out to the shop to install them. They didn't fit my Bass, so I called Jim, and we arranged to ship my Bass to him, so he could spec it out. AS from all production instruments, my Bass pickup cutouts were off from the factory, putting Jims pickups out of spec. He fixed the problem, wired the Bass and sent it back, (No Charge) for my approval.
I now have as much Bottom as I need, No Mid range tone loss, and a sweet warm tone, or Hot Punchy range as well.
I've played alot of custom Basses, and my P/J will Now stand along side any custom Bass and Perform as well or better.
If you are not getting the sound you are looking for, Check Jims Pickups out. You won't be dissapointed, or I'm not Big Dad!

Oh yeh, I wanted to add the most important thing.
I like most folks like to buy American. I gave the stock pickups there shot, and they just didn't cut it.
Most Bass pickups are manufactured in MASS PRODUCTION.
That being said, Jim gives each set of his custom pickups full detail that is needed to create the sound that you don't get from 10,000 quota mass produced pickups each day, in another Country. Jim is an Honest, good ol boy, tha will work with you,
