Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone knew if Mr. Pushic's quality had improved, say over the last 6 months to a year? I still see no luthiers that even comes close to his price range, except for Nino Valenti which is still a lot more to me. As most of you know, im selling off my entire stable, and along with some other small things. My grand total when I get done will be close to $2,500. I already plan on buying a used MTD Zeyphr 5 String, and I wanted to use the rest of the money for a DP Custom. So thats why I wanted to know if his quality had gotten any better? If so, then I will go ahead and do my plan, if not then I will have to rethink things. Thanks!

it looks like he's gotten better at maintaining quality. still not quite close to the other boutique builders, though.
If you even have to ask, then I think you've already answered your own question. Take a look at mpguitars.com. I own two and really like them.

Well I would, it's just I like having more than one bass. I just reallllly wish this guy would get his act together and produce better basses. His prices are a steal and it's such a hard deal to pass up.

DP like other self-taught builders will forsure get better. However the catch is the better they get the higher the prices because the better they get the more demand and the more the new equipement cost to keep up and continue the quality at a faster pace.

FWIW, there are about a half-dozen other builders I know of who are at pretty much the same price point as DP, but with (reportedly) greater consistency of quality.

Stambaugh is probably the least expensive I know of. Especially considering all the options that you get for either free or super cheap, when most other luthiers have big upcharges.
IMHO, there are still way too many question marks with DP. I am sure there have been good basses that he has built. But there have also been many bad ones--some to the point of being unplayable.

. This was only for a 5 string too! He did say that I hit about every upcharge there could be though lol, that was not my intention though! I think im either going to get a DP, Winters, or I might contact that Karl Thompson guy.

Actually, I'll have to eat my words here. I didn't realize we were talking about a below $1,000 price point. And the custom guys I was thinking of, such as FBB, Landing, R Bass, etc. have a low starting price (in the $1200 to $1500 range) but will indeed get more expensive if you have a lot of custom upcharge items.

Wow, you must have. Did you have a Pope preamp in there or something? Those can bring the price way up.
I still say Stambaugh. Cut a couple of those options maybe? I think you would be much happier with an incredible custom bass, than you would with a nice Zeyphr and a possibly decent DP custom. It seems like there's still too many unknowns when you order a DP.
Actually, if you're really set on the Zeyphr then I would get that some then some other production bass. Maybe a nice Stingray or Lakland or something like that (I don't really know what you're tastes are...).
Or how about a custom Kinal Kompact bass? I know I love mine
