Has School Become Too Hostile to Boys?

THAT DOES NOT SOUND LIKE SOMETHING WE SHOULD BE TEACHING KIDS.
THEY WILL FIGURE IT OUT WHEN THEY HIT ADOLESCENCE ANYWAY.
Fear. Everybody is so afraid of terrorists and psycho killers and whatnot that they see them in every shadow and every facet of life. They see it in 7 year old boys and in their own friends and family and it's just moronic. Doesn't stop it from happening though, everybody thinks everybody else is out to get them and the whole world is going to crap.
In a similar vein to the arguments about videogames influencing violence. It's not the kids who can't tell the difference between toy guns/videogames, and actually killing people in reality; it's the parents and teachers and people who make the laws who have that problem. If a person can't tell the difference between a kid playing with toy guns and a kid actually getting a real gun and shooting people, they have a really serious problem.
Also relevant, I think suspension and expulsion are probably the two stupidest punishments ever invented.

Yeah, I never that. Most kids would rather stay home from school for a few days, its hardly any form of punishment other than having to then catch up on missed assignments, I guess.

This article just goes to show that some people can't be given the power to enforce strict rules. A poptart is obviously not a gun, and doesn't run afoul of a zero tolerance for guns policy.
When I was in kindergarten, a kid said that he brought a gun to school, and he rightly got in trouble for saying it. Of course, I didn't see anyone check to see if he actually had. Seeing as he was 5 though, I highly doubt he did.

She just said "Because it's not appropriate. We don't allow any kind of gun in school." Which is a more reasonable reaction.

Here's what happened in a nutshell. Feel free to quote me on this as it is my own.
When this country was founded, it was founded on the notion that any of us would gladly lay down our lives to protect our liberties. We would do it to protect the liberties of our neighbors. Literally we as citizens were willing to sacrifice our very lives for this cause. And it was well worth it. Look what we built in only a couple of centuries.
These days we line up to give our liberties away in the interest of "If we can save just one life it's worth it." No, it is not. You can not regulate away evil. You can not regulate away violence. You certainly can not regulate away crazy. It is NOT worth it to crank out little girly men in the interest of perhaps stopping one of them from going nuts ten years from now and shooting up the sporting goods section of Target.
Here is where I come across as not so nice. But I wish no one any ill will. There is no ONE LIFE..... no child, no grandma, no anyone whose life is worth the rest of the nation giving up our way of life to protect. Nobody. Not even my own daughters. Not my mother. Not my neighbor. Not even a classroom full of fifth graders. For 300 million people to have to walk on eggshells and teach our children not to point imaginary finger guns or launch imaginary grenades is ridiculous. For a kid to get kicked out of school forever for bringing a pocket knife to school is even more ridiculous.
Where I grew up in northern NC in the 80s, ALL the boys had pocket knives. Nobody ever got cut. MOST boys had shotguns in their trucks in the fall because they were going hunting before or after school. Nobody EVER got shot. We got in fist fights. If the PE teacher walked up the fight, he gave both boys boxing gloves and told them that nobody leaves until somebody falls. There was rarely ever a fight. But if there was, the two boys were forced to shake hands and were sent to class. End of story. And we all turned out fine. We're all normal. Several class reunions later, none of us went nuts. By all accounts none of us hang dead cats from clotheslines. None of us hurt people.
If that is within them, or their environment at home leads them down that path, no amount of "sanitizing" their school environment will prevent it. Let them wrestle. Let them play dodge ball. Let them play cops and robbers. Turn off their stupid idiot boxes (video games) and send them outside to play BOY games..... football, army, cowboys and indians, whatever.
They are kids. They will learn right from wrong (just as I did) in the midst of being a real boy. If their parents are too sorry to teach them, their peers certainly will. Peer pressure was a GOOD thing back then. We literally had BB gun wars in the woods out back of our house. All the boys in the neighborhood played war, dodge ball, king of the hill, and just plain beat the crap out of each other for fun. We are all now dads, community leaders, officers in the church, teachers, law enforcement officers, and generally good people.
No, boys have NOT become too hostile. Schools have been taken over by a bunch of wussies who never got picked to be on the dodgeball team growing up. Now they think they can protect the "fragile" egos of the little children. Children are not fragile. Their grandfathers can die and they will play tag at lunch. Their house can burn down and they will be excited to see their new room a few days later. It is the grownups who are fragile projecting onto the little ones.

Bought my 5-yr old grandson to sfbay discovery center on Saturday. There is a mock up of a tug boat in the playground. To him and his two playmates it was a pirate ship. A broom became his sword, then it was a cannon and lastly it was an aqua lung. Someone gave me the stank eye because I was pretending my hand was a pistol and shooting back at his broomstick.
Boys aren't genetically designed to sit in an uncomfortable wooden chair for eight hours a day. They need to run and jump and throw stuff and wrestle, etc, etc. We have become a nation of sniveling cowards.
I have a friend who has a 10 year old son. Apparently at his school there is no talking at lunch and somehow, no talking at recess. This is a big part of the problem. If you don't allow kids (not just boys and girls) to be themselves and release natural energy, it's bound to come back to bite you in the ass. You will have a generation of kids who bottle every emotion up and don't know how to properly express themselves. No one seems to notice that as we've gotten more PC the problem has gotten worse.
It's really hard for me to agree with a lot of what's going on in our education system these days... And my wife is a teacher. We have some fairly heated arguments about it. Sorry to get somewhat political. I'll shut up.

we'd go out and play till dark, no parental supervision.
Do something bad at school, we'd get paddled,
then Dad would come home and finish the job properly.
I turned out normal (except for being a bass player)
My youngest cut too many days in HS, and I got taken to freakin' court.
He got a 10 day suspension.
(Yeah, miss too many days and he misses more. Right.)
He's at home.
I pointed to a pile of concrete block at the bottom of the hill.
"I want those moved to the top and stacked neatly"
The next day
"Your Mom decided she doesn't want 'em there.
Take them back down and stack them neatly."
Then I tossed him a tape measure, put all the guards back on the table saws and said
"OK, yer cutting for real now. Screw up a measurement and I'll have yer ass."
Never did that crap again.

The funniest/saddest thing that hit home about what two fingers said... I have a 12 year old playing football. He's in his 2nd year after a full season of seeing what it's all about. He still won't hit kids. He'll hit the crap out of pads and tackling dummies, but he won't hit kids. As soon as he's out there against his peers he gets thrown around and to be honest it's really hard for me to watch. I see him hitting the pads and getting after it, but he just can't hit other kids. I keep telling him to get tough out there and trying to show him how to hit and shed blocks but he wants no part of it. Anyway, end of my rant. It's just tough.
