Double Bass Hat pegs from Paul have been installed!

Looks amazing!! I am jealous! Those pegs are making it look like some 300 hundred year old authentic Gypsy Double Bass!
I bet that it sounds great too! Now I imagine a Baroque style Bow or a short Gypsy Bow with some thick black donkey hair and off you go! Next year I am traveling around the world and if I wind up where you live I sure would love to play it! Congratulations!

It took some work to make it work, increasing existing holes, figuring out spacing, etc.

I tuned new cylinders for those machines in order to make it work in my pegbox (and also because the originals were a little loose)

Thanks for the kind comments. Yeah, the pegs are a good fit - Paul Warburton and others saw it right.

The gut strings do give it authentic village sound. I'm always paranoid about not enough volume, but I've tested it a few times publicly, and it's plenty loud.

Now I imagine a Baroque style Bow or a short Gypsy Bow with some thick black donkey hair and off you go!

Yeah, that thick hair does give it a nice kick. Although I also use a classical german bow with white hair, for more melodic stuff. I'm perfectly fine with a starter fiberglass one from Bob Gollihur's site.

My Dear Lord, that is exactly what I had in mind!! My great friend has 3-4 horses and I have asked him to shave his dear animals so I can make my own bow! He has white, black, yellow, probably blue :) I am so excited now I will make one soon! But seriously that bass rocks!!

I hope you dont mind but I made the picture of your bass my screen saver!! Paul is a legend to make those pegs for you!!!

Hey, I'm honored!

Little clarification - Paul was very kind to send me those cool hatpegs, but I had to make them fit my bass. My pegbox is a bit wider than typical, so I needed longer shafts. Those pics are from my workbench, I turned the pegs out of some birchwood I had around and dyed them with india ink. I hope I didn't destroy their mojo by doing that.

I'm loving the bass now.

Btw, my horsehair comes from international violin co. But if you have a friendly resource, it doesn't get much more "from the scratch" than that.

Oh! I am sorry! Well done for the communal effort to make this sweet beauty blossom!!! You loving it and we loving it! I have never been more inspired to make a DB! I already have the fret board its a good start! :)

Oh man, what a bummer...now I won't sleep again.

But these are gut strings, and only 3 of them...maybe we can bump that up to 80 years?

Actually in all seriousness, I intentionally situated the strings so that they leave the peg as close to the side as possible, without touching it. Thinking

1) That minimizes any kind of sharp turns between the nut and the peg, and

2) That's where the peg is the strongest.

Just my theories, that's all.
