Hate being told I don't look rock and roll!!!

I had long hair for a while and random people would say "you must be a musician!" I don't want to look "like a musician." No offense to anybody, but when I hear that, I just think "sloppy." So I cut off all my hair! Now I am a secret musician!

It's crazy the number of people who say this to me - surely it's about how I sound?!

I'm 22, and unfortunately I have a bit of a baby face. That and not being able to grow facial hair doesn't mix well. I'm 6"2 and big so I'm surprised by how many people approach me to essentially bad mouth me to my face.

So what do I do? Do I take up cocaine and lose a load of weight? Do I cover my body head to toe in tattoos? Or do I tell them where to go?

It worked fine for Paul McCartney... you're good-to-go.:bassist:

Lee Sklar is a hired bass player who doesn't tour with rock and roll bands, so I fail to see the point of mentioning him.

SOOOO wrong! He's been touring constantly since the 60's

Rock isnt about how you look, its about telling them where to go.

My initial thought is that you should just be yourself. Wear the hair length and cut you like, and wear the clothes you like. BUT... be the best bass player you can be. Maybe to a shallow person, style invites respect. But you shouldn't care about the respect of a shallow person that much. On the other hand, skill creates respect. Learn, practice a lot, be a solid, skilled bass player, and you will be respected as a musician.

My second thought is "I'm old, what would younger me say?" And I think younger me would say that rock is rebellion, and if everyone is dressing like rockers, then those rockers are conforming little weasels, and it's time to buck that trend. Wear a pink button down pirate shirt with poofy sleeves. Wear a tee shirt that says "I LOVE QUILTING". Wear a suit and tie. As Mike Dirnt from Green Day said about the ballad "Time of Your Life": "Putting that song on our record was probably the most punk thing we could do." Is the most rock and roll thing you can do going to be dressing like other people expect you to dress?

Be yourself1000%!! Screw those people, I'm 9 years older than you but I had/still(kinda) a "baby face", I get carded still(I have to keep clean shaven for my job), having baby face is a good thing man(esp. if i was still single)!! I also had super long hair, and as cool as it was, I still looked young ,I couldn't grow real facial hair until my late 20's. So don't try to be more rock n roll, be yourself, the most rock n roll thing you could do!!

'Rock and Roll' is an attitude, not a dress code.
Anyone born after MTV (and other forms of music television) foisted itself on the world, and reduced a deep listening culture that was rich with subjective possibilities for the imagination to a superficially visual one that was ripe for mindless consumerism, has to work harder on understanding that.
Don't waste a moment explaining yourself to others laboring under that handicap, as the time would be better spent on personal liberation. Never pose, always be.

Be yourself. If you want to create a stage persona, you can, like Kiss, GWAR and Marilyn Manson. But really, if that's not you either, then skip it.

I vote for the cocaine and and tattoos... That's if you really care what they think and wanna do the least rock n roll thing (giving a 4uck what others think). You can always just be yourself... Nate Mendel and almost all of Weezer don't come to mind when thinking about a RnR look and IMO they rock pretty hard.

Tattoos don't mean Rock n Roll (whatever that is). Trust me, I have plenty and if I'm not gigging I'm at home taking care of my family or doing something way too geeky... Like posting on TB.

Start using steroids and shave your head ;)

Nah man. You shouldn't care about these dudes. Are they more rock n roll than you? I think not. Most likely just some douchebags that has too little to do so they complain about things that doesnt live up to their unprofessional standards.
