Hats at gigs?

I wear a hat everywhere. It started out as just another part of the fisherman's tux, old fishing shoes, shorts, t shirt, and a ball cap. don't always wear the tux these days, but I've grown fond of the hat so I wear it everywhere.
There is also the fact that I get financial consideration from some tackle and (fishing) rod component manufacturers in exchange for promoting their product(s) so the hat is also a plug for my sponsors.
My current fave is a skull with a ballyhoo clenched in it's jaws and crossed bones, which is the logo for a manufacturer of trolling teasers and bubblers. Not only does it plug a friend's business it makes me a pseudo pirate, and I'm always happy to do my part to keep the FSM strong and viable.

i dunno.....i look ridiculous in anything other than a ball cap...some guys can pull off a fedora,snap brim or cowboy,and if i could i probably would ...my favorite is my kenworth logo hat ......i'd qualify by saying that those flat brim with the decals on them look ridiculous ,even on the rack at the store.....what i'd really like to know where you can buy quality ball caps that actually fit....
I'm just the opposite of you in that I look like a dork in a ball cap. I don't think anyone has made a decent cap since they started making them with that stupid one-size fits all snap in the back. I hate the flat brim, too. When I was a kid, we used to roll the brim (we called it the bill) and place it into a large-mouth jar until it took a set.

I'll be 66 soon. If I want to wear a hat, jeans and tennis shoes I do. If my band mates don't like it, that is their problem. For me, playing gigs is not making a living, it is a hobby. So far I've not had complaints. Usually most of our audience is dressed like I am. Bar owners don't care how we dress as long as we draw a crowd, they buy drinks and don't leave.
I wear one for most of the gigs I have led light band for the fedoras one cloth and one leather some others are 59fifty baseball caps

I have a newsie hat I wear sometimes but not on stage unless I need a haircut. But I wear glasses so hats can be a bit much. I got some bright green sunglasses I wear at outdoor gigs.
Hats indoors? No, ma'am. A gentleman removes his hat.
Baseball caps are for kids. And baseball players on the field.

when we were kids a "real" ball cap was something we could only dream of owning,and the few guys i knew that had them spent a lot of time making the bill/brim "just so'" and a kinda crease on top that emulated a certain player of the era....
hats off inside is from some long ago etiquette and if they can find some reason for it i'd think about complying.....it used to be that men accompanying women walked on the outside on a sidewalk as people used to empty their chamber pots out the window...no one does that now and women can safely walk close to the curb....
..there are a lot of things that are considered good manners that no longer have any practical reasons .... depends which ones make more sense to uphold....would you rather sit next to a drunk.noisy moron at a public event that remembered to take his hat off or a guy in a hat that behaves respectfully?...

Ok, so now I am told that jeans shorts are uncool, cargo shorts are uncool, dress shorts are uncool...what do we wear? Iam going to bust out my old Jams this summer. Bring the early 80's thrash look back full tilt. Jams, Antrhax shirt, and Chucks....not much different than what I wear now, except I normally wear camo shorts or cargo pants 
I always wear a vintage dark green grey fedora when I play. Also when I go out sometimes. It is a look I like. I live in America and hats are not taken off inside just because I am a gentleman. That is probably still popular in some places and that is fine. Maybe it is regional. I still open car doors for a lady. Getting dressed up a little is something that has gotten a little lost. I prefer it to a sloppy look. With that being said, I still remove it in a restaurant. I wear it in and take it off to eat. In a bar, that seems nonsense. Well, because it is nonsense. When I play the Elks Lodge, since everyone must remove their hat after six, I simply don't bring one. I believe in being respectful of their rules. Asking if you should wear a hat, I don't really understand. Only you know.
I almost read this as shirts, not shorts.
Oh well, I don't let others dictate my clothing choices.

I have a gym bag full of ball caps and a drawer full of tshirts I've gotten as SWAG over the years from different events/venues I've worked at for my "day" job. My wife has threatened to clean out the whole lot if I bring more home. I wear some of them if I figure I'll feel good and/or look good in them. I also have a long drover coat with matching "cowboy" wide brimmed hat I love, but the opportunities to wear them around here and not look truly silly are few and far between. I'd wear 'em with a Peacemaker in a strongside holster and another tucked in my waistband crossdraw if I knew I wouldn't get arrested/freak out such people what have overly tender sensibilities. I *like* that look, I know how/when to use those tools, and if I do say so, I wear it well. Ha!
I have heard here its dorky to wear a band tshirt, other than your own, at a gig. Whatever. I'm looking for a black Ampeg t, quite honestly. I WILL wear that on a gig.

If you are a great player, you can wear anything. Check that Dunlop strings add that ends up on the pages here sometimes.
